You know the feeling? You come home after a long day, ready to relax and catch up on your favourite MagentaTV show, and then it hits you – a letter from Telekom. Another price hike. Yes, you read that right. Just in time for April, the Bonn-based company is increasing the monthly charges for countless existing customers. And it's not just your internet connection; your beloved TV plan is affected too. As someone who's been around here almost as long as landlines have existed, all I can say is: Spring awakening at Telekom – unfortunately, in your wallet.

Five euros more – and that's just the beginning?

We're specifically talking about the MagentaZuhause plans (DSL and fibre optic). From April 1, 2026, many existing customers will see around five euros more deducted from their accounts each month. So, if you've bundled your internet contract with MagentaTV, you'll feel it double. Telekom cites increased costs and network expansion as the reasons. Yeah, sure – inflation hits the big Telekom headquarters too. But it still stings. What's particularly frustrating: if you recently got yourself a Telekom MagentaTV Stick or a Telekom Magenta TV Box Play, hoping for a budget-friendly streaming option, you'll now suddenly be paying more. The hardware doesn't change the base price.

From Magenta TV (AT) to MAGENTA TV - CZ: The neighbours are watching closely

Of course, this price increase initially applies only to German contracts. But we know that what Telekom does in Germany often has a knock-on effect. Our colleagues in Austria, using their Magenta TV (AT) service, are certainly watching developments closely. And even in the Czech Republic, where the provider operates as MAGENTA TV - CZ, people will be wondering: will this come to us next year? Maybe a small consolation: if you take your German contract abroad, for example as a cross-border commuter, you'll also face the higher bill. Taking a detour via the Czech or Austrian version won't help there.

So, what can you do? Three options for affected customers

Before you angrily yank your MagentaTV Stick out of the socket: take a deep breath. You have options. This price increase grants you a special termination right. This means you can cancel your contract if you don't want to pay the higher price. However, you should first check if another provider actually works well at your place. You don't want to end up with a cheaper provider but a slower connection.

  • Just accept it and keep paying: The most convenient, but most expensive, solution. At least you avoid the hassle of cancelling and setting up a new connection.
  • Use the special termination right and switch: If you're really annoyed, you can use this window to move to another provider. Check comparisons beforehand – sometimes new customer deals are tempting.
  • Negotiate with Telekom: Sounds crazy, but it often works. Call their helpline and say you want to cancel. The customer retention team might then offer you a discount that at least cushions the increase.

Personally, I'd recommend the third option. A phone call can't hurt, and in the worst-case scenario, you've just spent a few minutes on hold. By the way: if you only have a pure DSL connection without MagentaTV, you're still affected – that extra five euros will be added there too.

My two cents: Always these April surprises

It's almost becoming a tradition: Telekom hikes prices in spring, and we customers are left fuming. Honestly, MagentaTV itself is actually a pretty good thing – the integration of streaming services, the voice-controlled box, it all works smoothly. But the price shock in April can really dampen the mood for many. My recommendation: maybe hold off on getting that Telekom MagentaTV Stick until after you've had a successful negotiation. Or, use this as an opportunity to consider spending more time outdoors – at least until the next bill arrives.
