Telekom hikes prices: What MagentaTV users in Ireland need to know
You know the feeling? You get home in the evening, ready to settle in and catch up on your favourite MagentaTV show, and then it lands on the doormat: a letter from Telekom. Another price hike. Yep, you read that right. Just in time for April, the German giant is upping the monthly bills for countless existing customers. And it's not just your broadband that's affected, but your beloved telly package too. As someone who's been covering this beat since the days of dial-up, all I can say is: spring has sprung at Telekom – right in your wallet.
A fiver more – and that's just for starters?
We're talking about the MagentaZuhause plans (DSL and fibre). From the 1st of April 2026, many existing customers will see around an extra fiver taken from their account each month. So, if you've bundled your broadband with MagentaTV, you'll feel the pinch twice over. Telekom's reasoning? Rising costs and network upgrades. Yeah, sure – even the big Bonn HQ isn't immune to inflation, we get it. But it still stings. What's really annoying? If you recently bought a Telekom MagentaTV Stick or a Telekom Magenta TV Box Play, hoping the streaming deal would save you a few bob, you're suddenly forking out more. The fancy hardware doesn't change the base price, after all.
From Magenta TV (AT) to MAGENTA TV - CZ: The neighbours are watching closely
Now, this price hike technically only applies to German contracts for now. But we all know that what Telekom does in Germany often sends ripples across the water. You can be sure our Austrian friends using Magenta TV (AT) are keeping a very close eye on things. And even over in the Czech Republic, where they operate as MAGENTA TV - CZ, folks will be wondering: is our turn next year? One small consolation, if you can call it that: if you're living abroad with a German contract, say as a cross-border commuter, you're still on the hook for the higher bill. Switching to the Czech or Austrian version won't get you out of it.
So, what can you do? Three options for affected customers
Before you yank the MagentaTV Stick out of the telly in a fit of rage, take a breath. You've got options. This price hike gives you a special right to cancel. That means you can walk away from your contract if you're not happy paying more. Just make sure you check if another provider actually gives you decent service at your gaff first. You don't want to jump ship to a cheaper deal only to end up with a painfully slow connection.
- Grudgingly pay up: The easiest, but priciest option. At least you save yourself the hassle of cancelling and setting up a new line.
- Use the right to cancel and switch: If you're genuinely annoyed, you can use the notice period and move to another provider. Do your homework on comparison sites first – new customer deals can be tempting.
- Negotiate with Telekom: Sounds mad, but it often works. Give their customer service line a bell and tell them you're thinking of leaving. Their retention team might just offer you a discount to soften the blow of the increase.
Personally, I'd say give the third option a lash. A phone call won't hurt, and at worst you've wasted a few minutes on hold. Oh, and one more thing: if you've got a broadband-only plan without MagentaTV, you're still affected – that extra fiver is added on regardless.
Here’s my two cents: Some April Fool's joke
It's becoming a bit of a tradition at this stage: Telekom puts its prices up in spring, and we customers are left cursing. Which is a shame, because MagentaTV itself is a decent enough service – the way it integrates streaming platforms, the voice-controlled box, it all works pretty smoothly. But the price shock landing in April could well spoil the fun for a lot of people. My advice? Maybe hold off on buying that Telekom MagentaTV Stick until you've had a successful chat with their retention team. Or, take this as a sign to spend a bit more time out and about – at least until the next bill arrives.
