You know the feeling? You get home in the evening, ready to settle in and catch up on your favourite MagentaTV show, and then bam: a letter from Telekom. Another price hike. Yep, you read that right. Just in time for April, the Bonn-based company is bump up the monthly fees for countless existing customers. And it's not just your plain internet connection that's affected, but your beloved TV package too. As someone who's been around here almost as long as landlines have existed, all I can say is: spring has sprung at Telekom – unfortunately, it's your wallet that's feeling the bloom.

Five bucks more – and that's just the start?

We're talking specifically about the MagentaZuhause plans (DSL and fibre optic). From 1 April 2026, many existing customers will see around an extra five dollars taken from their account each month. So if you've bundled your internet contract with MagentaTV, you'll feel the pinch twice over. Telekom's reasoning? Increased costs and network upgrades. Yeah, right – inflation hits the big Telekom headquarters too, apparently. But it still stings. The real kicker? If you recently grabbed a Telekom MagentaTV Stick or a Telekom Magenta TV Box Play, thinking the streaming deal would help you save a bit, you're now suddenly forking out more. The hardware doesn't change the base price, after all.

From Magenta TV (AT) to MAGENTA TV - CZ: The neighbours are watching closely

Sure, this price hike technically only applies to German contracts for now. But we all know the score: what Telekom does in Germany often sets a precedent. You can bet the team in Austria, with their Magenta TV (AT) service, are keeping a very close eye on things. And even in the Czech Republic, where the provider operates as MAGENTA TV - CZ, folks will be wondering: will we be next next year? Maybe a small crumb of comfort: if you've got a German contract and you're living abroad, like cross-border commuters, you're still up for the higher bill. Taking a detour via the Czech or Austrian version won't help you there.

So, what can you do? Three options for affected customers

Before you yank the MagentaTV Stick out of the wall in a fit of pique: take a breath. You've got options. This price hike gives you a special termination right. That means you can walk away from your contract if you don't want to pay more. But you should definitely check if another provider actually works properly at your place first. You don't want to end up with a cheaper provider but a slower connection that leaves you hanging.

  • Grin and bear it: The easiest, but most expensive, solution. At least you save yourself the hassle of cancelling and setting up a new connection.
  • Use the termination right and switch: If you're really ticked off, you can use the deadline to jump ship to another provider. Check out some comparison sites first – new customer deals can be tempting.
  • Negotiate with Telekom: Sounds crazy, but it often works. Give their helpline a ring and say you're thinking of cancelling. The customer retention team might just offer you a discount to soften the blow of the increase.

Personally, I'd go for option three. A phone call can't hurt, and at worst, you've just spent a few minutes on hold. Oh, and one more thing: if you've only got a plain DSL connection without MagentaTV, you're affected too – that extra five bucks is getting tacked on regardless.

My two cents: These April surprises are getting old

It's practically a tradition by now: Telekom jacks up prices in spring, and us customers are left to curse. Don't get me wrong, MagentaTV itself is actually pretty neat – the integration of streaming services, the voice-controlled box, it all works smoothly. But the price shock hitting in April could put a real damper on things for a lot of people. My advice? Maybe hold off on grabbing that Telekom MagentaTV Stick until after you've had a successful chat with their retention team. Or, take this as your cue to reconsider spending more time outdoors – at least until the next bill arrives.
