Telekom hikes prices: What MagentaTV customers need to know now
You know the feeling? You get home in the arvo, ready to chill and catch up on your MagentaTV show, and then bam – a letter from Telekom. Another price hike. Yep, you read that right. Right on cue for April, the Bonn-based telco is bumping up the monthly fees for heaps of existing customers. And it's not just your plain internet connection; your beloved TV option is copping it too. As someone who's been around here almost as long as the landline itself, all I can say is: spring awakening at Telekom – unfortunately, it's one that hits the wallet.
Five bucks more – and that's just for starters?
Specifically, we're talking about the MagentaZuhause plans (DSL and fibre). From 1 April 2026, many existing customers will see around an extra five dollars debited from their account each month. So if you've bundled your internet contract with MagentaTV, you'll feel it double. Telekom's reasoning? Increased costs and network expansion. Yeah, right – even the big Telekom HQ isn't immune to inflation, we get it. But it still stings. Particularly annoying: if you recently grabbed a Telekom MagentaTV Stick or a Telekom Magenta TV Box Play, thinking you'd snagged a streaming bargain to keep costs down, you're now suddenly forking out more. The hardware doesn't change the base price, after all.
From Magenta TV (AT) to MAGENTA TV - CZ: The neighbours are watching closely
Sure, this price hike applies to German contracts for now. But we know the drill: what Telekom does in Germany often sets a precedent. You can bet the crew over in Austria, using their Magenta TV (AT) service, are keeping a very close eye on things. And even in the Czech Republic, where the provider goes by MAGENTA TV - CZ, people will be wondering: will this land on our doorstep next year? Maybe a small consolation: if you've taken your German contract overseas, say you're a cross-border commuter, you're still up for the higher bill. Taking a detour via the Czech or Austrian version won't help you there.
So, what can you do? Three options for affected customers
Before you angrily yank the MagentaTV Stick out of the wall: take a breath. You've got options. This price hike gives you a special termination right. That means you can bail on your contract if you don't want to pay more. But, you should definitely suss out whether another provider actually works well at your place first. You don't want to end up with a cheaper provider but a slower connection, do you?
- Just cop it sweet and keep paying: The easiest, but priciest, solution. At least you save yourself the headache of cancelling and reconnecting.
- Use the special termination right and switch: If you're genuinely cheesed off, you can use the deadline to jump ship to another provider. Check comparison sites first – sometimes there are decent new customer deals on offer.
- Negotiate with Telekom: Sounds mad, but it often works. Give their hotline a bell and say you're thinking of cancelling. The customer retention team might then offer you a discount that at least softens the blow of the increase.
Personally, I'd be leaning towards option three. A phone call can't hurt, and worst case, you've just spent a few minutes on hold. Oh, and one more thing: if you've got a plain DSL connection without MagentaTV, you're also affected – that five bucks is getting added on there too.
My two cents: These April Fools' jokes are getting old
It's almost a tradition now: Telekom jacks up prices in spring, and we customers are left to curse. Mind you, MagentaTV itself is actually a pretty decent offering – the way it integrates streaming services, the box with voice control, it all works smoothly. But the price shock come April could sour the experience for a few. My advice? Maybe hold off on grabbing that Telekom MagentaTV Stick until after you've had a successful chat with their retention team. Or, take this as your cue to spend a bit more time outdoors – at least until the next bill arrives.
