Ponsonby Fire: Thick Black Smoke Blankets Auckland Suburb as Crews Battle Blaze Near Petrol Station

Thick black smoke rising over Ponsonby, Auckland

If you were anywhere near Ponsonby Road this afternoon, you would have seen it—a towering plume of thick, black smoke that seemed to swallow the sky. The kind of smoke that makes your stomach drop. A fire had broken out in the heart of the suburb, sending panicked calls to the Ponsonby Fire Station and bringing crews rushing to the scene near the BP station on the corner.

The first units from the Ponsonby Fire Brigade Station (as the old-timers still call it) were there within minutes, but the fire had already taken hold. Flames tore through a building behind the petrol station, and for a while, the biggest fear was that it might spread to the fuel pumps. You could hear the sirens from three suburbs away.

I was chatting to a bloke who lives just down the road, in that gorgeous little property they call Beautiful Ponsonby Villa by Zodiak Stays. He said he grabbed his cat and his laptop and got out as soon as he heard the popping sounds. "It was like a war zone," he told me. And that phrase—"war zone"—it stuck with me. Because Ponsonby has seen its share of history, but nothing like this in recent memory.

It got me thinking about another Ponsonby, the one you read about in the old books. There's a line from a poem, Britain's memory, and to Fame's laid there their last immortal claims! Thou saw'st in seas of gore expire redoubted Picton's soul of fire—saw'st in the mingled carnage lie all that of Ponsonby could... It's about Sir William Ponsonby, who fell at the Battle of Waterloo. A soldier's death, immortalised in verse. And then there's The Grenadier Guards In The Great War Of 1914-1918 (Volume II), a weighty tome that sits in some local libraries, recording the sacrifices of another generation. Today, we weren't dealing with cannon fire or machine guns, but for a moment, as that black smoke billowed, it felt just as visceral, just as alarming.

Thankfully, this story didn't end in tragedy. The fire crews—legends, every one of them—got it under control before it could reach the petrol station. No one was seriously hurt, though a couple of firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. The building itself, which housed a small retail space, is gutted. But it could have been so much worse.

Here's what we know so far:

  • Fire reported just after 2pm near the Ponsonby Road petrol station.
  • Multiple fire crews, including from Ponsonby Fire Station, attended.
  • Building extensively damaged; no serious injuries reported.
  • Road closures in place; avoid the area if you can.

Traffic on Ponsonby Road is still a mess, and they're asking people to steer clear. The cause of the fire isn't known yet—fire investigators will be sifting through the wreckage tomorrow. But for now, the smoke has cleared, and Ponsonby is catching its breath. We'll update you as we learn more.
