Juan Soto Bears the Hopes of Nicaragua... The 'Soto Four' Shine in WBC Qualifiers
Last night at the Taipei Dome, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and nobody on, Nicaragua's last hope rested on the bat of Juan Soto stepping up for his fourth at-bat. His team was trailing Chinese Taipei 3-5. But everyone knew it. Everyone knew his bat had the power to tie the game with a single swing. Even though the final pitch resulted in a disappointing flyout to center field, sealing the loss, those nine innings proved the bright future of Nicaraguan baseball.
In this WBC qualifier, Nicaragua showed their mettle as a dark horse, battling fiercely against the strong favourites, Chinese Taipei. At the heart of their performance wasn't just one player, but four different players all named 'Soto'. This so-called 'Soto Four' delivered performances worthy of praise from their respective positions.
- Juan Soto (Cleanup Hitter): Went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th, showcasing his game-changing power.
- Juan Soto Ibarra (Leadoff Hitter): A perfect table-setter, going 3-for-5 with 2 stolen bases.
- Pedro Juan Soto (Starting Pitcher): Held down the mound with 7 strikeouts and only 2 earned runs over 5 innings.
- Juan Soto Viñolo (Third Baseman): Went 2-for-3 with an RBI, including a dramatic double in the bottom of the 8th.
Adding to their strength, veteran infielder Juan Soto Mayoria served as a driving force from the dugout, energizing the younger players. These four Sotos, contributing across various positions, represent the present and future of Nicaraguan baseball. Soto's home run in the 7th was particularly impressive—a towering 410-foot shot off a 80 mph changeup. Pedro Juan Soto's dominant 5-inning performance, with 7 strikeouts, effectively silenced the opposing lineup and shifted the game's momentum.
Although they narrowly lost their opening game, Nicaragua proved their immense potential. Their ability to go toe-to-toe with a powerhouse like Chinese Taipei until the very end was no fluke. Armed with their trump card, the 'Soto Four', Nicaragua has a strong chance to turn things around in their remaining qualifying games. This loss was a valuable one, confirming the exciting possibilities for Nicaraguan baseball. If the 'Soto Four' continue to develop, we'll surely be hearing a lot more from Nicaragua on the international stage in the near future.
