Juan Soto Carries the Hopes of Nicaragua... The 'Soto Four' Shine in WBC Qualifier
Last night at the Taipei Dome, with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth, Nicaragua's last hope rested on the bat of Juan Soto stepping up for his fourth at-bat. His team was trailing Chinese Taipei 3-5. But everyone knew the drill. One swing from him could level the score. Although the final pitch resulted in a disappointing outfield catch, sealing a tough loss, those nine innings proved the future of Nicaraguan baseball is bright.
In this WBC qualifier, Nicaragua showed their 'dark horse' credentials, pushing the strong favourites, Chinese Taipei, all the way. And at the heart of it wasn't just one player, but a remarkable four players all named 'Soto'. This so-called 'Soto Four' each delivered performances worthy of praise from their respective positions.
- Juan Soto (Batting 4th): 1 hit from 4 at-bats, including a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th. Showed off his game-changing power.
- Juan Soto Ibarres (Batting 1st): A perfect table-setter with 3 hits from 5 at-bats and 2 stolen bases.
- Pedro Juan Soto (Starting Pitcher): Held the mound strong with 7 strikeouts and only 2 runs over 5 innings.
- Juan Soto Viñolo (Third Baseman): 2 hits from 3 at-bats, 1 RBI, including a dramatic double in the bottom of the 8th.
Add to that veteran infielder Juan Sotomayor, who provided the driving force from the dugout, encouraging the younger players. These four Sotos, excelling in different roles, represent the present and future of Nicaraguan baseball. Soto's home run in the 7th was a massive 125-metre shot off a 130km/h change-up. Pedro Juan Soto's impressive 5-inning, 7-strikeout performance effectively shut down the opposition's batting line-up and shifted the game's momentum towards his team.
Even though they narrowly lost the first game, Nicaragua proved their immense potential on the day. Pushing a powerhouse like Chinese Taipei all the way to the final out was no fluke. Armed with the 'Soto Four' as their trump card, Nicaragua has every chance to turn things around in their remaining qualifiers. This loss was a valuable lesson, confirming the exciting potential of Nicaraguan baseball. If the 'Soto Four' continue to develop, it won't be long before we hear Nicaragua's name mentioned regularly on the international stage.
