Profeco calls on shoppers affected by Walmart and Bodega Aurrera: how to join the class action
G'day folks! If you've felt like you've been overcharged at the checkout lately, or spotted a special that wasn't quite what it seemed, you'll want to pay attention. Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has officially launched a call for anyone who's been affected by Walmart and Bodega Aurrera to join a class action. It's on.
Why is Profeco pushing for this class action?
Profeco has flagged potential dodgy practices at these retail chains. Think being charged the wrong price at the register, misleading ads about low prices, or fees that weren't made clear upfront. The law applies to everyone, and if the big retailers have crossed the line, it's time they were held accountable. That's why the Federal Consumer Protection Agency has kicked off this legal process and needs affected shoppers to get on board and make their collective voice heard. This isn't just about getting a few bucks back; it's about putting a stop to unfair practices.
Who can join and what do you need?
If you've shopped at any of these stores in the last few months and have your doubts, check if you tick these boxes. The invite is open to anyone who made purchases at Walmart or Bodega Aurrera and believes they were ripped off. To join the class action, you'll need:
- A valid form of ID (like your INE card, passport, or professional license).
- Proof of purchase (receipts, invoices, or bank statements showing the transaction).
- A short explanation of why you think you were affected (for example, you were charged a different price to what was on the shelf).
- To head down in person or send a legal rep to your local Profeco office.
It doesn't matter if your receipt is from a while back, as long as it falls within the period Profeco is investigating (which covers roughly the last two years). If you didn't keep the paper receipt, suss out your bank statements or digital invoices – any evidence is helpful.
Profeco offices where you can lodge your complaint
The good news is you don't have to trek all the way to Mexico City to get this sorted. Profeco has offices all over the country. For instance, if you're in the Bajío region, you can swing by PROFECO Querétaro; if you're in San Luis Potosí, Profeco SLP is ready for you; and for those near the coast, the Profeco Delegación Veracruz is currently accepting documents. In Mexico City, the Profeco Centro office (on Leona Vicario) is also open. Just look up your local branch, take your documents, and ask about the "class action against Walmart". Their advisors will walk you through it.
When's the deadline?
Like all good things, this offer won't last forever. The call for participants is open for the next few days, so don't snooze on it. The sooner you sign on, the sooner the legal action can move forward. If you know someone who's had a rough time at these stores, pass it on. There's strength in numbers, and with the Federal Consumer Protection Agency on our side, our chances of getting our money back are looking much better.
So, you know the drill: round up your receipts, find your nearest Profeco office (be it Querétaro, SLP, Veracruz, or Centro), and make your rights count. Don't let them take you for a ride. Because as they say, "sometimes the cheap stuff ends up costing you," but with Profeco, we can make sure you get back every last cent.
