It's finally here: Volkswagen is giving the ID.3 a second crack. Under the name ID.3 Neo, the electric compact hatch arrives with a decent dose of freshness – visually, technically, and especially when it comes to efficiency. I've had a look at what the Neo can really do and whether it manages to bridge the gap between innovation and everyday practicality.

VW ID.3 Neo

A familiar face, but sharper than before

At first glance, you'll recognise it straight away, but look a bit closer and the updates start to show. The front end has been cleaned up, LED matrix headlights are now standard, and the air intakes are integrated more subtly into the bumper. There are also new colours and, most notably, fresh alloy wheels that not only look good but also aid aerodynamics. Inside, VW has upped the ante with higher-quality materials – so, goodbye hard plastic look. The interface is now the latest infotainment system with a 12.9-inch display, and the steering wheel finally has proper buttons again. Thank goodness!

More power, more range, more driving enjoyment

The biggest changes are under the skin. The motors are more efficient, and the battery packs are larger. The ID.3 Neo is expected to be offered with three battery sizes: 58, 77, and even 82 kWh net. The range? Depending on the version, it now reaches up to 550 kilometres on the WLTP cycle – music to the ears of anyone tackling longer trips. Charging is standard at up to 170 kW at a fast-charger, giving you enough juice for 200 kilometres in just a quarter of an hour. Perfect for a stress-free trip from Auckland to Hamilton and back.

Rolling on eco-friendly rubber: Bridgestone Turanza Eco

To make sure that energy gets you all the way to your destination, the folks in Wolfsburg have come up with something special. The top-spec versions of the ID.3 Neo sit on exclusive 20-inch wheels, fitted with Bridgestone Turanza Eco 215/45 R20 95T XL tyres. These are developed specifically for electric vehicles – they offer extremely low rolling resistance without compromising on grip. This not only saves power but also increases tyre life. They also come with an XL load rating to handle the extra weight of the electric drivetrain. It's a well-thought-out package.

The key details on the ID.3 Neo at a glance

  • Design: Revised front and rear, new colours, aerodynamic wheels.
  • Interior: Better materials, 12.9-inch infotainment, proper steering wheel with buttons.
  • Drivetrain: More efficient motors, batteries up to 82 kWh, range up to 550 km (WLTP).
  • Charging: Up to 170 kW DC, 200 km in 15 minutes.
  • Tyres: Top versions with Bridgestone Turanza Eco 215/45 R20 95T XL.

When will it arrive here in New Zealand?

The first examples are expected to land at local dealers towards the end of the year. Pricing will likely be slightly higher than the outgoing model, but the improved spec and greater range should make up for that. If you're keen to get in early: order books are open. For my part, I'm curious to see if the ID.3 Neo can finally cement its place as the electric Golf – the signs are promising.
