It's finally here: Volkswagen is giving the ID.3 a second innings. Dubbed the ID.3 Neo, this electric hatchback arrives with a fresh new look—visually, technically, and most importantly, when it comes to efficiency. I took a closer look to see what the Neo is really capable of and if it can strike that perfect balance between cutting-edge innovation and everyday practicality.

VW ID.3 Neo

A familiar face, but sharper than before

At first glance, you'll instantly recognise it, but a closer look reveals all the updates. The front end has been cleaned up, the LED matrix headlights are now standard, and the air intakes are more subtly integrated into the bumper. There are also new paint shades and, most notably, fresh alloy wheels that not only look great but also improve aerodynamics. Inside, VW has upped the game with higher-quality materials—say goodbye to that hard-plastic look. The controls are now handled by the latest 12.9-inch infotainment system, and the steering wheel finally gets proper buttons again. Thank goodness for that!

More power, more range, more driving pleasure

The biggest changes are hidden underneath the skin. The motors are more efficient, and the battery packs are larger. The ID.3 Neo is expected to be offered with three battery sizes: 58, 77, and even 82 kWh net. The range? Depending on the variant, it now goes up to 550 kilometres on the WLTP cycle—music to the ears of anyone planning long road trips. Charging is standard at up to 170 kW at a fast-charging station, giving you enough juice for 200 kilometres in just 15 minutes. Perfect for a stress-free drive from Mumbai to Pune and back.

Rolling on eco-friendly rubber: Bridgestone Turanza Eco

To ensure that energy takes you all the way to your destination, the folks at Volkswagen have thought of something special. The top-spec versions of the ID.3 Neo sit on exclusive 20-inch rims, shod with Bridgestone Turanza Eco 215/45 R20 95T XL tyres. These are specifically designed for electric vehicles—they offer extremely low rolling resistance without compromising on grip. This not only saves battery power but also increases their lifespan. Plus, with the XL marking, they're built to handle the extra weight of the electric powertrain. It's a thoughtfully designed package.

ID.3 Neo: Key highlights at a glance

  • Design: Updated front and rear bumpers, new colours, aerodynamically optimised alloys.
  • Interior: Premium materials, 12.9-inch infotainment display, steering wheel with physical buttons.
  • Powertrain: More efficient motors, batteries up to 82 kWh, range up to 550 km (WLTP).
  • Charging: Up to 170 kW DC fast charging, 200 km range added in 15 minutes.
  • Tyres: Top variants come with Bridgestone Turanza Eco 215/45 R20 95T XL.

When will it arrive in India?

The first units are expected to arrive at dealerships by late this year. Prices will likely be slightly higher than the outgoing model, but the improved features and greater range should more than make up for it. For those who want to start dreaming now: order books are open. For my part, I'm keen to see if the ID.3 Neo can finally cement the electric Golf's place in the market—the signs are certainly promising.
