Former Ozeki Takanonami Opens Up About Takanohana Stablemaster and His Stable's Future: "A Return to Ozeki is Only a Matter of Time"
"My boys still have a lot of growing up to do. Especially those guys in the top division – they need to take a good, hard look at where they stand." As he said this with a hearty laugh, he looked every bit the "fighting general" he once was on the dohyo. Takanohana stablemaster, formerly the fierce Ozeki Takanonami who delivered countless legendary bouts, now watches his charges with an intense, coaching gaze.
It's been nearly 20 years since he retired from active competition and took on the elder name Takanohana to lead Takanohana stable. During that time, he has produced numerous top-division wrestlers (sekitori) from his stable, nurturing it into an undisputed, established powerhouse. In a recent interview, while expressing satisfaction with his disciples' growth, the stablemaster also spoke with the sternness of someone pushing them towards even greater heights. Of particular note is his focus on restoring the rank he once held: Ozeki.
"A Return to Ozeki is Only a Matter of Time": The Meaning Behind the Words
"Honestly, with their potential, I see Ozeki as just a stepping stone. The next step is for them to realise that for themselves and break out of their shells. They're clearly getting stronger." The stablemaster stated this with conviction. Although he didn't mention any names, his beaming expression as he spoke revealed a deep and certain trust in his star wrestlers, who have been making remarkable strides in recent years.
The stablemaster highlighted the following key points on the path back to Ozeki:
- "Mental Fortitude": The sense of responsibility and self-awareness needed to aim for Yokozuna.
- "Consistency": The strength befitting the Ozeki rank, characterised by never having a losing record.
- "Encouraging Outside Training": Broadening their horizons by training with wrestlers from other stables.
Disciples Inheriting the DNA of the "Fighting General" Takanonami
A defining feature of the current Takanohana stable is its fierce thrusting and pushing style, reminiscent of the stablemaster's own active days. Reflecting nostalgically, the stablemaster remarked, "The kids these days are diligent, they follow the training menus properly. But that alone isn't enough. Back when I was wrestling, I feel like I was more... desperately seeking something, always on the move."
Nevertheless, the look in his disciples' eyes during daily practice certainly holds a fighting spirit. "Seeing how far they can grow without setting limits for themselves – that's my greatest joy now." The look in the stablemaster's eyes as he said this wasn't that of the "fighting general" glaring down an opponent on the dohyo, but the loving gaze of a "nurturing father" watching over their growth.
The countdown to the return of an Ozeki has already begun. At the heart of it are undoubtedly the wrestlers of Takanohana stable, who carry on the spirit of the former Ozeki Takanonami. It's a compelling time to watch Grand Sumo.
