It's been about 20 years since he hung up his mawashi and took the elder name Tamanoi to take the reins at Tamanoi Stable. In that time, he's groomed numerous sekitori from his stable, building it up into the established and respected heya it is today. During a recent interview, the stablemaster expressed that while he's encouraged by his pupils' progress, he also emphasized the discipline needed to aim even higher. Tamanoi-oyakata stated this with conviction. "Watching them grow, without setting limits on themselves, to see just how far they can go—that's my greatest joy right now." As he said this, his eyes weren't those of the "fighting general" glaring down an opponent on the dohyo. They were the eyes of a "devoted mentor", lovingly watching his charges mature.
