It's only been a few days, but the news has really shaken us all up: word that the Fat George Tavern in Essling had to file for insolvency spread like wildfire through the neighbourhood. A two-toque restaurant that truly stands for genuine Viennese hospitality – and now this. But anyone who knows the publican knows he's not one to give up easily. The fight for survival is already in full swing.

More than just a toque-worthy spot

Fat George was never one of those sterile, fancy restaurants where you just don't feel at ease. Here, the whole package was simply right: hearty, traditional cuisine, but prepared with such dedication that even the critics from the major restaurant guides had no choice but to award two toques. Most of us know the feeling: when you want to impress guests from out of town or just fancy a really top-notch meal again, you head to Essling. Whether it's the perfectly cooked pike-perch, the classic boiled beef, or the game dishes in autumn – every single bite here just hit the spot.

The insolvency and the fight to survive

The bankruptcy caught the regulars completely off guard. It's not down to poor management, but a whole host of issues that have been plaguing the industry for months: skyrocketing energy prices, more expensive food supplies, and the eternal struggle to find staff. However, the operator isn't throwing in the towel. Behind the scenes, they're feverishly working on a plan, negotiating with creditors and potential investors. The goal is clear: to preserve the Fat George Tavern in its familiar form.

What makes Fat George so special

  • The kitchen: Two toques at prices you'd usually only pay at a simple pub – that's a real rarity in Vienna. Here, tradition isn't just preserved; it's kept vibrantly alive.
  • The beer garden: One of the nicest spots in the 22nd district. Sitting under old trees in summer, having a glass of wine and enjoying the homemade bratwurst – you almost forget you're in a big city.
  • The atmosphere: It's the kind of place where everyone knows each other. The owner himself comes to your table, checks if everything was to your liking, and always has a friendly quip ready. No stiff service, but genuine, unpretentious hospitality – just the way you want it.

A piece of Essling's identity

For us here in the neighbourhood, the Fat George Tavern is more than just a place to eat. It's a meeting point, a little piece of home. So many people have celebrated here – weddings, milestone birthdays, or just relaxed Sundays with the family. That's why so many hearts are attached to this place. The first supporters are already rallying in the area, and the outpouring of sympathy on social media is enormous.

Now it's time to keep our fingers crossed that the rescue effort succeeds. The Chamber of Commerce and the local district politicians have already pledged their support. If anyone can pull it off, it's the team at Fat George. I'll definitely be popping into Essling more often over the next few weeks – not just to show support, but also because I don't want to miss out on the best pike-perch in the city. So then, hopefully see you soon at Fat George!
