Hello and Eid Mubarak to everyone! The festive atmosphere is building up, and traditions are coming to life. The most important part of Eid day, after the joy of completing Ramadan or standing at Arafat, is the Eid prayer. Lots of people ask exactly how to perform it โ€“ what's obligatory and what's recommended? Today, I wanted to explain it from the heart, in a simple and clear way, so you can head to the prayer ground with peace of mind.

Eid prayer at the musalla

Timing and Place of the Eid Prayer

First things first, the Eid prayer isn't at dawn, no. Its time begins about fifteen minutes after sunrise and continues until just before the Dhuhr (noon) call to prayer. So, there's no need to rush; have breakfast, get ready, and head out calmly. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to pray it in the musalla, an open space outside the mosque, so everyone could gather: young and old, men and women. Here in our country, major mosques and prayer grounds welcome the worshippers, and it's performed in congregation, with immense reward.

How to Perform the Eid Prayer Step by Step

Now, let's get to the core: how to pray in Islam in general, and the Eid prayer specifically. The Eid prayer consists of two rak'ahs (units), but it includes additional takbeers (saying "Allahu Akbar") compared to regular prayers. Let's break it down in order:

  • Intention (Niyyah): The heart is key. Silently intend to pray the Eid prayer as a confirmed Sunnah.
  • First Rak'ah: Begin with the opening takbeer (Takbirat al-Ihram). Then recite the opening supplication (Dua al-Istiftah) silently. After that, say six additional takbeers, on top of the opening one, making a total of seven takbeers. Raise your hands with each takbeer and say "Allahu Akbar." Between the takbeers, you can say: "Subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wala ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar" (Glory be to God, praise be to God, there is no god but God, and God is the Greatest).
  • After the takbeers, seek refuge with Allah (say "A'udhu billah..."), recite Al-Fatihah, and then recite another surah like Surah Al-A'la or Surah Qaf, which the Imam will recite aloud.
  • Second Rak'ah: Stand up from prostration, saying the takbeer for standing. Then, say five additional takbeers (apart from the takbeer for standing up). So, you'll say takbeer five times in a row, raising your hands each time. After that, recite Al-Fatihah and, for example, Surah Al-Ghashiyah, then bow (ruku), prostrate (sujood), sit for the Tashahhud, and conclude with the Tasleem (saying "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah" to the right and left).

This is the method relied upon by many scholars, and it's the easiest and most comprehensive. The main thing is to follow your Imam and not add extra takbeers on your own.

Etiquette and Sunnah Practices on Eid Morning

Regarding prayer and wudu instructions and its rulings, performing wudu for the Eid prayer is obligatory, just like for any other prayer. However, there are specific Sunnah practices for Eid โ€“ learn them and teach them to your kids:

  • Taking a Bath (Ghusl): It's Sunnah to purify yourself and take a bath before heading out.
  • Eating Before the Prayer: On Eid al-Fitr, it's recommended to eat an odd number of dates before leaving, to show that you've broken your fast after Ramadan. On Eid al-Adha, the Sunnah is to eat after the prayer from the Eid sacrifice.
  • Dress: Wear your finest clothes โ€“ they don't have to be new, just clean and nice. Apply perfume and show your happiness.
  • Going and Returning Paths: Take two different routes โ€“ go one way and return another โ€“ to increase the chances of seeing and greeting fellow Muslims.
  • Takbeer: Reciting takbeer on Eid day is a Sunnah. You'll hear it everywhere. Repeat: "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah, wa Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil-hamd" (God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, there is no god but God; God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, and to God belongs all praise).

Common Mistakes to Watch Out For

Some people rush off after the prayer before listening to the sermon (khutbah). The sermon isn't obligatory, but it's a Sunnah, and it contains much goodness. Make sure to listen. Also, some brothers miss the Eid prayer altogether, using work or sleep as an excuse. It's a confirmed Sunnah, and it shouldn't be neglected. And brothers, don't prevent the women from going out to the prayer ground โ€“ wearing proper hijab and avoiding display โ€“ all the goodness lies in this gathering.

Summary

The Eid prayer brings joy and happiness; it's a way of thanking Allah for enabling us to complete our worship. Learn how to perform the Eid prayer and teach it to your families. Renew your intentions, and go out with hearts full of love and forgiveness. May you all draw closer to Allah, and may this Eid bring us goodness, blessings, and prosperity.
