Hello, dear brothers and sisters, Eid is at our doorstep, and I pray that you are well and blessed every year. The festive atmosphere is beginning to brighten, and the beautiful traditions are appearing. The most important thing on Eid day, after the joy of completing the fast or standing at Arafah, is the Eid prayer. Many people ask about the exact method of Eid prayer – what is obligatory and what is recommended? Today, I wanted to explain it to you sincerely, in a simple and clear way, so you can go to the prayer ground with a peaceful and confident heart.

Time and Place of Eid Prayer

First thing, the Eid prayer is not at Fajr time, no. Its time begins approximately 15-20 minutes after sunrise and continues until just before the Dhuhr call to prayer. So, one shouldn't rush. Have breakfast, get ready, and head out calmly. The Prophet ﷺ used to pray it in the Musalla, an open space outside the mosque, so that everyone could gather: young and old, men and women. Here in our country, big mosques and dedicated prayer grounds welcome the worshippers, and it's prayed in congregation, and the reward is immense.

How to Perform the Eid Prayer Step by Step

Now, let's get to the core, the method of prayer in Islam in general, and the Eid prayer specifically. The Eid prayer consists of two Rak'ahs, but with additional Takbirs compared to regular prayers. Let's explain it in order:

  • Intention (Niyyah): The heart is the foundation. Intend in your heart to pray the Eid prayer, an emphasized Sunnah.
  • First Rak'ah: Begin with the Takbirat al-Ihram (saying "Allahu Akbar"). Then recite the opening supplication (Du'a al-Istiftah) silently. After that, say six extra Takbirs, not including the opening Takbir, making a total of seven Takbirs in this Rak'ah. Raise your hands with each Takbir and say "Allahu Akbar." Between the Takbirs, you can say: "Subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar" (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest).
  • After the Takbirs, seek refuge with Allah (recite Ta'awwudh), recite Surah Al-Fatihah, and then recite a short Surah like Surah Al-A'la or Surah Qaf. The Imam will recite loudly.
  • Second Rak'ah: Stand up from prostration, saying the Takbir for standing. Then, say five extra Takbirs (not including the Takbir for standing up). So, you say Takbir five times in succession, raising your hands with each one. After that, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and, for example, Surah Al-Ghashiyah. Then, go into Ruku (bowing), Sujud (prostration), sit for Tashahhud, and say Tasleem (greeting of peace to conclude).

This is the method relied upon by many scholars, and it is the easiest and most comprehensive. The main thing is to follow your Imam and not add any Takbirs on your own whim.

Etiquettes and Sunnahs of Eid Day Before the Prayer

Regarding the teachings of prayer and ablution and its rulings, performing Wudu (ablution) for the Eid prayer is obligatory, just like for any prayer. However, there are specific Sunnahs for Eid. Learn them and teach them to your children:

  • Taking a Bath (Ghusl): It is Sunnah to purify yourself and take a bath (Ghusl) before going out.
  • Eating Before the Prayer: On Eid al-Fitr, it is recommended to eat an odd number of dates before leaving, to show that you have broken your fast after Ramadan. On Eid al-Adha, the Sunnah is to eat after the prayer from the meat of your sacrifice (Qurbani/Udhiya).
  • Dress: Wear your best clothes. They don't necessarily have to be new, but they should be clean and neat. Apply perfume and show your happiness.
  • Going and Returning Paths: Take two different routes – go by one way and return by another – so you can see and greet more Muslims.
  • Takbir (Proclaiming Allah's Greatness): Reciting Takbir on Eid day is a Sunnah. You can hear it everywhere. Repeat after others or say it yourself: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd" (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise).

Common Mistakes We Must Watch Out For

Some people rush after the prayer and leave before listening to the sermon (Khutbah). The sermon is not obligatory but it is a Sunnah, and it contains much goodness. Make sure to listen to it. Also, some brothers miss the Eid prayer using work or sleep as an excuse. It is an emphasized Sunnah and should not be neglected. And regarding women, brothers, do not prevent them from going out to the prayer ground. Let them go out in proper Islamic hijab, without displaying adornments. All goodness lies in this gathering.

Summary

The Eid prayer is a source of joy and happiness. It is a way to thank Allah for enabling us to complete acts of worship. Learn the method of Eid prayer and teach it to your families. Renew your intention, and go out with hearts filled with love and forgiveness. May you be closer to Allah each year, and may this Eid bring goodness, blessings, and prosperity upon us and you.
