Eid al-Fitr 2026 in Saudi Arabia: Astronomical predictions point to Friday, 20 March, settling the debate
As soon as the last ten days of Ramadan begin, conversations at gatherings and on social media platforms inevitably turn to the question on everyone's mind: when is Hari Raya? Here in Saudi Arabia, we experience a unique blend of astronomical anticipation and spiritual preparation before every Eid. But this year, the astronomical calculations are exceptionally clear-cut, and it seems we're looking at a well-defined scenario that offers peace of mind, especially for those who like to plan their Raya break well in advance.
Friday, 20 March.. The first day of Eid al-Fitr, astronomically speaking
If you check the precise astronomical data, the matter seems pretty much settled. Based on accurate scientific data, sighting the Shawwal crescent moon on Wednesday, 29 Ramadan (corresponding to 18 March) is completely impossible, whether with the naked eye or even using telescopes. Why? Because the moon will set before sunset on that day, and the astronomical conjunction occurs after sunset. This means the new crescent simply won't be in the sky for us to observe after Maghrib prayer.
Therefore, as expected, the month of Ramadan will complete its full 30 days. Thursday will be the 30th day of Ramadan, making the first day of Eid al-Fitr, astronomically, fall on Friday, 20 March 2026, corresponding to 1 Shawwal 1447 AH. This aligns perfectly with the calculations that have pointed to this date since the beginning of the holy month.
The "Eid al-Fitr takbirs" return... and the festive atmosphere begins at Maghrib
For me, the most beautiful part of the night before Hari Raya is the takbirs resonating everywhere. On the night of Thursday, 19 March, after it's officially confirmed that the month has completed its 30 days, the Eid al-Fitr takbirs will begin to fill the air from mosques and homes. These takbirs, chanted from after Maghrib or Isha prayers right up to the Eid prayer, are what truly transform the atmosphere from the worshipful quiet of Ramadan to the joyous gratitude of Eid. Don't forget to recite them with your family and children; they provide an irreplaceable spiritual boost before the morning of Eid.
Raya Holiday: When does it start and when do we go back?
Great news for those wanting to plan their schedules. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has set the Eid al-Fitr holiday for both the public and private sectors. The break will begin at the end of the working day on Wednesday, 18 March, and will last for 4 days. This means a return to work on Sunday, 22 March, unless there are any adjustments to the official calendar. It's a perfect opportunity for some quality family time or even a short getaway.
Hari Raya night and returning to the true nature (Fitrah)
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is the reward for those who exercised patience. After a month of fasting and night prayers, we welcome the celebration by following a beautiful Prophetic tradition. On the morning of Eid, it's recommended to start with something sweet (even just a date) before heading out for the Eid prayer. We should wear our best clothes, proceed to the prayer ground, and recite the takbirs along the way.
Also, remember the importance of paying Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer, to purify the fast and bring joy to those in need, ensuring everyone can share in the happiness. Raya isn't just about food and new clothes; it's about strengthening family ties and bringing happiness to others.
Anyway, whether Hari Raya falls on Friday as the calculations suggest or on Saturday in some other countries, the main thing is to welcome it with a pure heart and sincere intentions. Wishing you and your family a blessed and joyful Eid.
