Eid al-Fitr Takbeers and Eid Date in Saudi Arabia

As soon as the last ten days of Ramadan begin, the talk in every gathering and on social media platforms turns to the one question on everyone's mind: when is Eid? Here in Saudi Arabia, we experience a unique blend of astronomical anticipation and spiritual fervour before every Eid. But this year, the astronomical calculations are exceptionally decisive. It looks like we're heading for a clear-cut scenario that will put many minds at ease, especially for those who like to plan their Eid holiday well in advance.

Friday, March 20th.. The First Day of Eid al-Fitr, Astronomically

For those checking the precise astronomical calculations, it's nearly a done deal. Based on accurate scientific data, sighting the Shawwal crescent moon on Wednesday, the 29th of Ramadan (corresponding to March 18th) is practically impossible, whether with the naked eye or even using telescopes. Why? Because the moon will set before sunset on that day, and the astronomical conjunction occurs after sunset. This means there simply won't be a crescent moon in the sky to spot after Maghrib prayer.

Therefore, as expected, the month of Ramadan will complete its full 30 days. Thursday will be the 30th of Ramadan, making the first day of Eid al-Fitr, astronomically, Friday, March 20th, 2026, corresponding to 1 Shawwal 1447 AH. This aligns perfectly with the calculations that have pointed to this date since the beginning of the holy month.

"Eid al-Fitr Takbeers" Return.. The Atmosphere Shifts from Maghrib

For me personally, the most beautiful part of Eid night is the takbeers that fill the air. On the night of Thursday, March 19th, once it's officially confirmed that the month is complete, the Eid al-Fitr takbeers will resonate from mosques and homes. These takbeers, chanted from after Maghrib or Isha prayers right up to the Eid prayer, are what truly transform the atmosphere from the devotion of Ramadan to the joy and gratitude of Eid. Don't forget to recite them with your family and kids; they provide an irreplaceable spiritual boost before the Eid morning.

The Eid Holiday: When Does It Start and When Do We Go Back?

Great news for anyone looking to plan their schedule. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has set the Eid al-Fitr holiday for both the public and private sectors. The break will begin at the end of the workday on Wednesday, March 18th, and will last for 4 days. This means a return to work on Sunday, March 22nd, unless there's any change to the official calendar. It's a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with family or even plan a quick getaway.

Eid Night and Returning to the Sound Fitrah (Natural Disposition)

Eid al-Fitr is the reward for those who patiently fasted. After a month of fasting and prayer, we welcome Eid by following a beautiful Prophetic tradition. On Eid morning, it's recommended to start with something sweet (even just a date) before heading out for the Eid prayer. We wear our best clothes, head to the prayer ground (musalla), and recite the takbeers along the way.

Also, remember the importance of giving Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer. It purifies the fast and brings joy to those in need, ensuring the celebration is shared by everyone. Eid isn't just about food and new clothes; it's about strengthening family ties and bringing happiness to others.

At the end of the day, whether Eid falls on Friday as the calculations suggest, or on Saturday in some other countries, what matters most is that we welcome it with pure hearts and sincere intentions. Eid Mubarak to you all.

  • Expected Date: Friday, March 20th, 2026.

  • Holiday Duration: 4 days (according to the official announcement).
  • Official Sighting: The official moon sighting will be on the evening of Thursday, March 19th (29th of Ramadan), but calculations point to completing the month.
