Eid al-Fitr 2026 in Saudi Arabia: Astronomically Friday 20 March, Calculations Settle the Debate
As soon as the last ten days of Ramadan begin, chatter in gatherings and on social media platforms kicks off with the question on everyone's mind: when's Eid? Here in Saudi Arabia, we experience a unique astronomical and spiritual atmosphere before every Eid. But this year, the astronomical calculations have been exceptionally decisive, and it looks like we're heading for a clear scenario that puts minds at ease, especially for those who like to plan their Eid holiday in advance.
Friday 20 March.. The First Day of Eid al-Fitr Astronomically
If you check the precise astronomical calculations, the matter is pretty much settled. Based on accurate scientific data, sighting the crescent moon of Shawwal on Wednesday, 29th Ramadan (corresponding to 18 March) is absolutely impossible, whether with the naked eye or even using telescopes. Why? Because the moon will set before sunset on that day, and the conjunction occurs after sunset. This means the crescent simply won't be in the sky for us to spot it after Maghrib prayer.
Therefore, as expected, the month of Ramadan will complete its full thirty days. Thursday will be the 30th of Ramadan, and consequently, the first day of Eid al-Fitr astronomically will be on Friday, 20 March 2026, corresponding to 1 Shawwal 1447 AH. This aligns perfectly with the calculations that have pointed to this date since the beginning of the holy month.
"Eid al-Fitr Takbeers" Return.. And the Festive Atmosphere Starts from Maghrib
For me, the best part of Eid night is those takbeers filling the air. On the night of Thursday, 19 March, once it's officially confirmed that the month is complete, the Eid al-Fitr takbeers will ring out from mosques and homes. These takbeers, which start after Maghrib or Isha prayer and continue until the Eid prayer, are what transform the atmosphere from the worshipful mood of Ramadan to one of joy and gratitude. Don't forget to recite them with your family and kids; they give an irreplaceable spiritual boost before the Eid morning.
Eid Holiday: When Does It Start and When Do We Go Back?
Great news for anyone wanting to organise their schedule. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has set the Eid al-Fitr holiday for both the public and private sectors. The holiday will begin at the end of the working day on Wednesday, 18 March, and will last for 4 days. This means a return to work on Sunday, 22 March, unless there's a change to the official calendar. It's a golden opportunity to spend quality time with family or even take a short trip.
Eve of Eid and Returning to the Sound Nature (Fitrah)
Eid al-Fitr is the reward for those who persevered. After a month of fasting and prayer, we welcome Eid with a beautiful Prophetic tradition. On Eid morning, it's recommended to start with something sweet (even just a date) before heading out for the Eid prayer. And to wear our best clothes, go to the prayer ground, and recite the takbeers along the way.
Also, remember the importance of giving Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer, to purify the fast and bring joy to those in need, so happiness is shared by all. Eid isn't just about food and new clothes; it's about strengthening family ties and bringing happiness to others.
Anyway, whether Eid falls on Friday as the calculations suggest or on Saturday in some other countries, the important thing is to welcome it with pure hearts and clear intentions. Eid Mubarak to you all.
- Expected Day: Friday 20 March 2026.
- Holiday Start: End of day on Wednesday 18 March.
- Holiday Duration: 4 days (according to the official announcement).
- Official Sighting: The evening of Thursday 19 March (29th Ramadan) is when the sighting will take place, but calculations point to completing the month.
The coming days just need the official confirmation of the sighting by the Supreme Court, but all signs point to us getting ready to welcome Eid al-Fitr on Friday. May you be well every year.
