Yle Areena Just Updated – Here Are the New Films and Series to Check Out Now (Plus One Warning)

Right then. It’s that time of the week again when Yle Areena gets a fresh load of films and series, while at the same time, a few others disappear – often the ones you don’t even notice until it’s too late. I just spotted that the Areena iOS app has been updated to version 6.4.0. Nothing earth-shattering on the surface, but it does feel a bit snappier in use. Small improvements you don’t really think about until they’re there.

Scene from the film Iron Sky The Coming Race

But the main event, of course, is what’s actually landing on the service. This week, Areena has been loaded with so much content that you could easily forget what’s about to leave. And that’s worth keeping an eye on. Because if you haven’t yet watched two particular films that are vanishing very soon, this is your last chance – unless you want to claim later that you hated them all along, which is also a perfectly valid strategy.

New arrivals to snap up now

The list is long, so I’ve picked out the ones I’d make a mental note of myself. This time, Yle has clearly focused on quality, not just quantity. There are a few hidden gems here that you might miss if you’re just scrolling the front page.

  • Avara luonto – naturally. A new episode this week, taking us somewhere few have been. These are always top-tier viewing, and even though they stick around on Areena for a good while, there’s something special about watching them the moment they drop. It’s just the right vibe.
  • One of the new films is definitely not one to skip. It’s Iron Sky: The Coming Race. If the first Iron Sky was wild, this sequel takes things to a whole new level. Nazis on the moon, dinosaur riders, and utterly bonkers antics. It’s either completely stupid or an absolute stroke of genius – and that’s exactly why you have to watch it.
  • Also added are two new Nordic drama series that aren’t the dull kind, but the ones people end up chatting about over lunch. One of them has already earned critical praise in ways few dare to.

But hang on – these are disappearing very soon

Because Areena being Areena, as it fills up, it also empties out. And right now, ten films are leaving, some of which are seriously impressive. There are Oscar winners and classics in the mix – the kind you always mean to watch but never get around to, only to regret it once they’re gone.

If you’re planning a quality weekend, I’d suggest taking a look at that list. There’s at least one film there you wouldn’t watch even for money – and that might just end up being your new favourite. But you’ve been warned: if you don’t act now, you’ll be waiting years to see them again.

Why Areena is still the one to beat

It’s easy to say that Netflix and other streaming services grab all the attention. And sure, they do. But Yle Areena is still the place to find the most peculiar, the strangest, and often the most important content out there. The fact that iOS version 6.4.0 is now running smoothly is just a nice technical bonus. What matters more is that you can still find Avara luonto-style quality here, along with films you wouldn’t think to look for anywhere else.

So, to kick off the week: update the app if you haven’t already, and go watch the ones that are about to leave. Then you can focus on the new arrivals at your leisure. And if anyone asks why you’re rewatching Iron Sky, just tell them it was a cultural necessity.
