Yle Areena just got an update – here are the new movies and shows to check out now (plus one warning)

Right then. It's that time of the week again when Yle Areena gets a fresh batch of movies and shows, and just like clockwork, a few disappear in the process – often the ones you don't even notice until it's too late. I just spotted that the Areena iOS app has been updated to version 6.4.0. Nothing earth-shattering on the surface, but it does feel a bit snappier in use. Just those little tweaks you don't really think about until they're there.

A scene from the film Iron Sky The Coming Race

But the real story, of course, is what's actually landing on the platform. This week, Areena's copped such a solid drop that you could easily forget what's about to leave. And that's where you need to be careful. See, if you haven't watched two particular films that are vanishing any minute now, this is your last chance to catch them – or you can always claim later that you hated them from the start, which is a totally legit strategy, to be fair.

These new arrivals are worth locking in now

The list is a long one, so I've picked out the ones I'd be jotting down myself. This time around, Yle has clearly gone for quality over quantity. There are a few gems in the mix that could easily slip under the radar if you're just scrolling the front page.

  • Avara luonto – obviously. There's a new episode this week that heads to places few have ever been. These are always top-tier viewing, and while they hang around on Areena for a while, there's just something about watching them the moment they drop. It's a whole vibe.
  • One of the new films is definitely not one to skip. It's Iron Sky: The Coming Race. If the first Iron Sky was wild, this sequel takes things to a whole new level. Nazis on the moon, dinosaur-riding warriors, and absolutely unhinged chaos. This is either completely ridiculous or pure genius – and that's exactly why you have to watch it.
  • There are also two new Nordic drama series that have landed, and these aren't the dull kind – these are the ones people end up talking about over lunch. One of them has already scored reviews that are off the charts in a way you don't often see.

But hang on – these are disappearing any minute

Because Areena is Areena, as it fills up, it also empties out. And right now, there are ten films on their way out, some of which are absolute bangers. We're talking Oscar winners and classics that you always mean to get around to but never do – and then you kick yourself once they're gone.

If you're keen on a quality weekend, I'd suggest having a squiz at that list. There's at least one film there you wouldn't watch even if you were paid – and that very one might just become your new favourite. But fair warning: if you don't act now, you'll be waiting years to see them again.

Why Areena is still the one to beat

It's easy to say Netflix and the other streaming giants hog all the attention. And sure, they do. But Yle Areena is still the place for the weirdest, quirkiest, and often the most essential stuff. The fact that iOS version 6.4.0 now runs smoothly is just a nice little bonus on the tech side. What matters more is that you'll still find quality like Avara luonto here, along with films you wouldn't think to look for anywhere else.

So, to kick off the week: update the app if you haven't already, and go watch the ones that are about to leave. Then you can settle in and focus on the new arrivals. And if anyone asks why you've re-watched Iron Sky, just tell them it was a cultural imperative.
