Yle Areena’s had an update – here are the new films and series you need to check out now (plus one warning)
Right then. It’s that time of the week again when Yle Areena gets a fresh batch of films and series, and at the same time, a few quietly disappear – the kind you don’t even notice until it’s too late. I’ve just spotted that the Areena iOS app has updated to version 6.4.0. Nothing groundbreaking on the surface, but it does feel a bit slicker in use. Small improvements you don’t think about until they’re there.
But of course, the main event is what’s actually arriving. This week, Areena has been loaded with so much content that it’s easy to forget what’s about to leave. And that’s worth keeping an eye on. Because if you haven’t watched two particular films that are disappearing very soon, this is your last chance – or you can always claim later that you hated them in advance, which is also a perfectly valid strategy.
Here are the new additions to grab while you can
The list is long, so I’ve picked out the ones I’d make a note of myself. This time, Yle has clearly focused on quality rather than just quantity. There are a few gems here that might slip under the radar if you’re just browsing the front page.
- Avara luonto – obviously. This week brings a new episode that goes to places few have ever been. These are always top-tier viewing, and even though they stay on Areena for a while, there’s something special about watching them right when they drop. It’s just the vibe.
- One of the new films is definitely not one to skip. That’s Iron Sky: The Coming Race. If the first Iron Sky was wild, this sequel takes things to a whole new level. Nazis on the moon, dinosaur riders, and absolutely bonkers antics. It’s either completely daft or genius – and that’s exactly why you need to watch it.
- There are also two new Nordic drama series added, and not the dull kind – the kind that gets people talking during the lunch break. One of them has already been getting rave reviews in places most wouldn’t dare.
But hold on – these are leaving very soon
Because Areena is Areena, while it fills up, it also empties out. And this time, ten films are about to disappear, some of which are absolutely top-notch. We’re talking Oscar winners and classics that you might never get around to watching, but once they’re gone, you’ll regret it.
If you’re planning a quality weekend, I’d recommend taking a look at that list. There’s at least one film there you wouldn’t even watch if you were paid – and that might just turn out to be your new favourite. But you’ve been warned: if you don’t act now, you’ll be waiting years to see them again.
Why Areena is still the one to beat
It’s easy to say that Netflix and other streaming services get all the attention. And sure, they do. But Yle Areena is still the place for the quirkiest, strangest and often the most important content. That the iOS version 6.4.0 is now running smoothly is just a nice technical bonus. What really matters is that here you can still find Avara luonto-style quality and films you wouldn’t even think to look for elsewhere.
So, to kick off the week: update the app if you haven’t already, and go watch the ones that are about to leave. Then you can focus on the new arrivals at your leisure. And if anyone asks why you’re watching Iron Sky again, just tell them it was a cultural necessity.
