The 28-year-old announced on Friday afternoon that he is ending his career with immediate effect. The reasons are devastating: recurring panic attacks have finally defeated the fighter.
A fighter's heart no longer beats at race pace
Just try to imagine it: a young athlete, after a devastating cancer diagnosis (testicular cancer in 2018), fights his way back with incredible mental strength, celebrates his World Cup comeback in 2020, finishes fourth in Kitzbühel in 2022 – and then there's this invisible enemy in his head, stronger than any opponent on the course. In his farewell letter, Niels Hintermann spoke of a "torment that no training in the world can cure." The joy of skiing, the ultimate driving force for any athlete, he said, had been taken away by the anxiety.
The mind said stop, the heart wanted to go on
His ordeal began gradually. After returning from cancer, everything seemed possible; his body was strong, his technique brilliant. But then came the first shadows. Panic attacks that often struck him completely unexpectedly: in the starting house, during the warm-up run, even at night in his hotel room.
