Highlights of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games

The wait is over! Today, 6th March 2026, the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games kick off against the stunning backdrop stretching from the fashion capital of Milan to the rugged peaks of the Dolomites. For twelve days, athletes from across the globe will demonstrate the true meaning of sheer willpower and mastery on snow and ice. For us Swiss fans, this marks the start of an intensely exciting period – our Para-athletes are, after all, among the world's elite in almost every discipline.

Switzerland's Mission: Going for Gold in the Classics

Looking at the squad selected by Swiss Paralympic, it genuinely sends a shiver down my spine. We're fielding a small but exceptionally talented delegation that will be right up there contesting the top spots in the core sports. I'm particularly intrigued by the Para Biathlon events. Our athletes have proven time and again this World Cup season that they can handle the immense pressure combining endurance skiing with pinpoint accuracy shooting. The trails in Val di Fiemme, one of the most legendary Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, are notoriously tough and will reward the very best.

But that's far from the whole story:

  • Para Alpine Skiing: On the slopes around Cortina d'Ampezzo, our speed specialists will be hunting for downhill glory. The steep pistes are legendary – a perfect arena for athletes who thrive on risk.
  • Para Cross-Country Skiing: Over in Val di Fiemme, it's all about endurance and tactics. This could be where our cross-country skiers spring a surprise.
  • Wheelchair Curling: One of our absolute strongholds! In the curling hall at Pinerolo near Turin (yes, they're drawing on some historic venues too), our team will battle for every stone. Winter Paralympics 2026 wheelchair curling – it's a Swiss tradition and a genuine medal prospect.

Hosts Italy and the Global Challenge

The participant fields are deeper and stronger than ever. Around 600 athletes from over 50 nations have booked their tickets. Naturally, the home favourites from Italy will be spurred on by passionate local crowds, but the Scandinavians in cross-country skiing, the Canadians in wheelchair curling, and of course the Chinese, who have made incredible strides in recent years, will push us to our absolute limits. It's going to be a fierce battle decided by hundredths of a second and perfectly placed curling stones.

Where the Medals are Won: The 2026 Venues

The Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are a true tribute to winter sport. In addition to the locations already mentioned, I'd like to highlight the vast parallel slalom snowboard arena in Cortina. And, of course, the ice hockey hall in Milan, which will host Para Ice Hockey (formerly known as sledge hockey). It's fascinating to see how these Games are transforming the entire north of Italy into one massive sporting stage. Milan brings the glamour, the mountains bring the tradition – it's this unique blend that makes these Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games so special.

Over the coming days, I'll be keeping a very close eye on things whenever our Swiss stars are in action. Whether it's a biathlete, an alpine skier or a curler – they all deserve our full backing. It all starts today. Let's get the telly on, cheer them on, and keep everything crossed. Forza Svizzera!
