2026 Winter Paralympics in Milano Cortina: How Switzerland Is Kicking Off the Games of a Lifetime

The wait is finally over! Today, March 6, 2026, the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games get underway, set against the stunning backdrop stretching from the fashion capital of Milan to the rugged peaks of the Dolomites. For twelve days, athletes from across the globe will showcase the true meaning of sheer willpower and mastery on snow and ice. For us Swiss fans, it’s going to be an intense ride—our Para athletes are, after all, among the world's best in nearly every discipline.
Switzerland's Mission: Going for Gold in the Classics
Looking at the squad Swiss Paralympic has put together gives me chills. We're sending a small but mighty delegation that's poised to compete at the very front in the core sports. I'm particularly pumped for the Para Biathlon events. Our athletes have proven multiple times this World Cup season that they can handle the intense combination of endurance skiing and pinpoint shooting. The track in Val di Fiemme, one of the most legendary Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, is a grueling test that will reward the very best.
But that's just the start:
- Para Alpine Skiing: On the slopes around Cortina d’Ampezzo, our speed demons will be hunting for that downhill glory. The steep courses are infamous—perfect for athletes who thrive on risk.
- Para Cross-Country Skiing: Over in Val di Fiemme, it's all about endurance and strategy. This could be where our cross-country skiers pull off a major surprise.
- Wheelchair Curling: One of our absolute strong suits! In the curling arena in Pinerolo, near Turin (yes, they're tapping into some historic venues too), our team will battle for every single stone. 2026 Winter Paralympics wheelchair curling – that's a Swiss tradition and a rock-solid medal hope.
Hosts Italy and the Global Competition
The field of athletes is more stacked than ever. Around 600 competitors from over 50 nations have secured their spot. Sure, the host nation Italy will have the home crowd roaring them on, but the Scandinavians in cross-country skiing, the Canadians in wheelchair curling, and of course the Chinese team—who have made unbelievable strides in recent years—will push us to the limit. It's going to be a fierce battle decided by hundredths of a second and picture-perfect curling stones.
Where the Medals Are Won: The 2026 Venues
The Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are a true tribute to winter sports. In addition to the places already mentioned, I have to highlight the massive parallel slalom snowboard course in Cortina. And, of course, the hockey arena in Milan, which will host Para Ice Hockey (formerly known as sledge hockey). It's incredible to see how these Games are transforming the entire northern part of Italy into one massive sports stage. Milan brings the glamour, the mountains bring the tradition—this fusion is what makes the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games so uniquely captivating.
Over the next few days, I'll be glued to the action whenever our Swiss stars are on the start line. Whether it's a biathlete, an alpine skier, or a curler—they all deserve our full support. It all starts today. Let's fire up the TVs, cheer them on, and keep our fingers crossed. Forza Svizzera!
