2026 Winter Paralympics in Milano Cortina: How the Swiss Team Kicks Off the Games of a Lifetime

The wait is finally over! Today, 6 March 2026, the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games get underway, set against the stunning backdrop stretching from the fashion capital of Milan to the rugged peaks of the Dolomites. For the next twelve days, athletes from across the globe will showcase the true meaning of raw determination and mastery on snow and ice. For us Swiss fans, it's going to be a heart-pounding ride – our Para athletes are, after all, among the world's best in almost every discipline.
Switzerland's Mission: Bringing Home the Hardware
Looking at the squad Swiss Paralympic has put together, I get goosebumps. We're heading to Italy with a small but incredibly strong delegation that's set to compete at the very front in the core sports. I'm especially keen on the Para Biathlon events. Our athletes have proven time and again this World Cup season they can handle the intense combo of endurance and precision shooting. The trails in Val di Fiemme, one of the most legendary Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, are notoriously tough and will reward the very best.
But that's just the start:
- Para Alpine Skiing: On the slopes around Cortina d'Ampezzo, our speed demons are chasing downhill glory. These steep, infamous runs are a perfect match for athletes who thrive on risk.
- Para Cross-Country Skiing: Val di Fiemme is also the stage for endurance and tactical racing. Our cross-country skiers could be the ones to pull off a major surprise.
- Wheelchair Curling: One of our absolute strengths! At the curling rink in Pinerolo, near Turin (yep, they're using some historic venues too), our team will be battling for every single stone. Winter Paralympics 2026 Wheelchair Curling is a Swiss tradition and a genuine medal prospect.
Hosts Italy and the Global Competition
The fields of participants are stronger than ever. Around 600 athletes from over 50 nations have secured their spots. Sure, the hosts from Italy will have the home crowd roaring them on, but the Scandinavians in cross-country, the Canadians in wheelchair curling, and of course the Chinese, who have made incredible strides in recent years, will push us to our absolute limits. It's going to be a fierce battle decided by hundredths of a second and perfectly placed curling stones.
Where the Action Happens: The 2026 Venues
The Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are a true love letter to winter sports. Besides the spots already mentioned, I have to highlight the massive parallel slalom snowboard arena in Cortina. And of course, the ice hockey hall in Milan, hosting the Para Ice Hockey (formerly known as sledge hockey). It's fascinating to see how these Games are transforming the whole of northern Italy into one giant stage for sport. Milan brings the glamour, the mountains bring the tradition – this blend is what makes these Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games so special.
Over the coming days, I'll be glued to the action every time our Swiss stars compete. Whether it's a biathlete, an alpine skier, or a curler – they all deserve our full support. It all kicks off today. Let's get the telly on, cheer like mad, and keep everything crossed for them. Go Switzerland!
