2026 Winter Paralympics in Milano Cortina: How Switzerland is Kicking Off the Games of a Lifetime

The wait is finally over! Today, March 6th, 2026, the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games get underway, set against the stunning backdrop stretching from the fashion capital Milan to the rugged peaks of the Dolomites. For twelve days, athletes from across the globe will showcase the true meaning of sheer determination and mastery on snow and ice. For us Swiss fans, it's the start of a nail-biting period – our Para athletes are, after all, among the world's elite in nearly every discipline.
The Swiss Mission: Hunting for Gold in the Classics
When I look at the Swiss Paralympic squad, it honestly sends a shiver down my spine. We're heading over with a small but mighty delegation that's set to compete at the very front in the core sports. I'm particularly looking forward to the Para Biathlon events. Our athletes have proven time and again this World Cup season that they can handle the pressure of gruelling laps combined with pinpoint shooting. The track in Val di Fiemme, one of the most legendary Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, is notoriously tough and will reward the very best.
But that's not all:
- Para Alpine Skiing: On the slopes around Cortina d'Ampezzo, our speed specialists are hunting for that downhill crystal. These steep pistes are infamous – perfect for athletes who thrive on risk.
- Para Cross-Country Skiing: Over in Val di Fiemme, it's all about endurance and tactics. This could be where our cross-country skiers pull off a surprise.
- Wheelchair Curling: One of our standout events! In the curling arena in Pinerolo near Turin (yes, they're tapping into some historic venues too), our team is fighting for every stone. Winter Paralympics 2026/Wheelchair Curling is a true Swiss tradition and a massive medal hope for us.
Hosts Italy and the Global Competition
The participant fields are stronger than ever. Around 600 athletes from over 50 nations have booked their tickets. Sure, the hosts from Italy will have the home crowd roaring them on, but the Scandinavians in cross-country, the Canadians in wheelchair curling, and of course the Chinese, who have made incredible strides in recent years, will really push us to the limit. It's going to be a fierce battle decided by hundredths of a second and perfectly placed curling stones.
Where the Medals are Won: The 2026 Venues
The Venues of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are a true tribute to winter sports. Besides the places already mentioned, I have to highlight the massive snowboard parallel slalom area in Cortina. And of course, the hockey arena in Milan, where Para Ice Hockey (formerly known as sledge hockey) will take place. It's fascinating to see how these Games are transforming the entire north of Italy into one massive sports stage. Milan brings the glamour, the mountains bring the tradition – this blend is what makes these Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games so uniquely special.
Over the coming days, I'll be glued to the screen whenever our Swiss aces are on the start line. Whether it's biathletes, alpine skiers, or curlers – they all deserve our full support. It all kicks off today. So, let's switch on the telly, cheer them on, and keep everything crossed. Go Switzerland!
