Ah, here we go again. Just when you thought we'd seen the last of the grey skies and drizzle, MetService goes and slaps a fresh weather warning on half the country. Course, it wouldn't be a proper Kiwi autumn without a bit of a flood scare, would it?

Rain clouds over New Zealand countryside

As of this morning, a heavy rain watch is in place for several regions: Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, and Tipperary. The team at MetService are warning of heavy downpours that could lead to localised flooding – so if you're heading out, best keep the gumboots handy and don't go driving through any puddles that look more like small lakes.

For the rest of us, it's just another day in paradise. You know how it goes: the rain buckets down, the roads get a bit dicey, and we all have a good old whinge about it over a cuppa. Days like this are when you need a bit of a laugh to lift the spirits. And honestly, isn't there a whole shelf of books dedicated to embracing the Kiwi way of life, weather and all?

Take 'How to Be Irish... Sure Tis Great Craic!' for instance – it's practically a guide to laughing in the face of a downpour. If you're feeling peckish while you're stuck indoors, you can't go wrong with 'The Big Irish Cookbook'. Nothing beats a hearty soup or stew when the wind's howling outside. And if you really need a chuckle, there's always 'Funny Feckin Irish Jokes' – or the even more colourful 'Filthy Feckin Irish Jokes' – to remind you that no matter how wet it gets, we never lose our sense of humour.

  • Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Tipperary – you're all in the firing line.
  • Localised flooding possible – take care on the roads.
  • Watch valid until late tonight – but let's be honest, it'll probably hang around.

Talking of weather that knocks you sideways, ever stop to think about those poor Spaniards who sailed into Irish waters back in 1588? The downfall of the Spanish Armada in Ireland is a grim reminder that our wild Atlantic storms have been wrecking plans for centuries. Those poor buggers thought they were heading home after a failed invasion of England, only to get smashed against the rocky west coast by gales that make today's warning look like a bit of drizzle. At least we have radar and raincoats now.

So there you have it. Another weather warning, another excuse to stay in, put the jug on, and maybe read up on how to be properly Irish while the rain hammers against the window. Stay dry, everyone – and if you see a flood, don't be the muppet who drives into it.
