Well, March has really given us a final blast of winter! Just when you thought spring was around the corner, suddenly Bonn gets absolutely dumped on with snow. Temperatures have plummeted, and the wind is whipping around your ears like it’s saying, "Thought winter was over, did ya?" Anyone braving the outdoors right now needs more than just a positive attitude.

Winter in Bonn: How to Survive the Freeze

Yesterday I dug out my old aviator hat – you know, the ones with ear flaps that make you look like a WWII pilot. And guess what? They’re totally back in style. Brands like YUECIBAI are making some seriously cool winter bomber hats that not only keep you toasty but actually look the part. For blokes, women, teens – everyone. The main thing is keeping those ears covered when you're walking along the Rhine in Bonn.

But a beanie alone won't cut it. What you really need in this weather is a seriously robust jacket. I swear by the JOB Winter Pilot Jacket BONN in black. It's perfect for our Rhineland winter: windproof, functional, and tough enough to take on a construction site. A mate of mine who works in building reckons they're the best. Those jackets are practically indestructible. Here's a quick checklist for anyone who has to head out:

  • Aviator hat with ear flaps – preferably from YUECIBAI
  • A tough winter pilot jacket – like the JOB BONN in black
  • A cosy local spot like the Bonnie Doone in Bad Godesberg
  • A hot cuppa and maybe a catalogue from the latest art auction

Art and Culture for Chilly Days

When it's this miserable outside, I usually head for some snug hideaway. There's a little pub in Bad Godesberg called the Bonnie Doone. They've got an open fire and a seriously good whisky selection. They call the place a "home away from home" – and that's exactly what it is. When the snow's lashing against the windows, you can sit inside and feel a world away.

Alternatively, you could just hunker down at home. I heard recently that Sotheby's in New York is auctioning off an incredible art collection on December 5th. There are graphic works by Daumier, Chagall, Gauguin and, of course, Bonnard – a name that always resonates here in Bonn. The collection comes partly from the estate of Paul L. Joachim from Chicago and from Mrs. Pierce Trowbridge Wetter of New York. Yeah, her name really was Wetter – fitting for the season, right? If I had the cash, I'd grab one of those colourful Bonnards for my wall. It'd make you forget the grey Bonn skies in no time.

Heading South of France? Holiday Home in Bonnieux

Some Bonn locals, though, are completely escaping the winter. A colleague of mine has booked a holiday rental in Bonnieux for February – that's in the Provence, nestled in the French hills. Apparently the lavender's already blooming there? Well, maybe not in February, but the sun's supposed to make more of an appearance than it does here. Bonnieux, Bonnie Doone – seems like everyone's heading to places starting with "Bon" this time of year. Maybe it's the promise of good wine.

So, stay warm out there, folks! Whether it's with an aviator hat, a pilot jacket, a session at the Bonnie Doone, or in front of the fire with a big art book – just make sure you get through these last few winter days comfortably. And who knows, maybe Bonn will spring into action eventually. But until then: hat on, jacket zipped, and get cosy!
