Wow, March really decided to give us one last blast of winter, eh? Just when you thought spring was around the corner, Bonn suddenly gets hit with a crazy dump of snow. Temperatures have plummeted, and the wind is whipping around like it's saying, "Think again, winter's not done!" If you have to head out right now, you need more than just a positive attitude.

Winter in Bonn: How to Brave the Cold

I dug out my old aviator hat yesterday – you know, the kind with ear flaps that makes you look like a pilot from the 40s. And guess what? They're totally trendy again. A brand like YUECIBAI, for instance, makes some really cool winter bomber hats that not only keep you warm but also look sharp. For guys, gals, everyone really. Main thing is keeping those ears covered when you're walking along the Rhine in Bonn.

But a hat alone won't cut it. What you really need in this weather is a seriously robust jacket. I personally swear by the JOB Winter Pilot Jacket BONN in black. It's perfect for our kind of Rhineland winter: windproof, functional, and it looks like you could take on any construction site. A buddy of mine who works in construction swears by his. Those things are just indestructible. Here's a quick checklist for anyone who has to venture out:

  • Aviator hat with ear flaps – preferably from YUECIBAI
  • Rugged winter pilot jacket – like the JOB BONN in black
  • A cozy spot like Bonnie Doone in Bad Godesberg
  • A hot tea and maybe a catalogue from the latest art auction

Arts and Culture for Chilly Days

When it's this unpleasant outside, I usually find myself drawn to cozy corners. There's this little pub in Bad Godesberg called Bonnie Doone. They've got a fireplace and a really good whisky selection. They call the place "Home away from home" – and that's exactly what it is. When the snow is pelting against the windows, you sit inside there and feel like you're in another world.

Or you can just get cozy at home. I heard recently that Sotheby's in New York is auctioning off an incredible art collection on December 5th. There are graphic works by Daumier, Chagall, Gauguin and, of course, Bonnard – a name that always resonates here in Bonn. The collection comes partly from the estate of Paul L. Joachim from Chicago and from Mrs. Pierce Trowbridge Wetter of New York. Yeah, her last name really was Wetter – fitting for the season, right? If I had the cash, I'd hang one of those colourful Bonnards on my wall. It would make the grey Bonn skies disappear in no time.

Heading to the South of France? Vacation Rental in Bonnieux

Some folks from Bonn, though, choose to escape the winter entirely. A colleague of mine rented a vacation home in Bonnieux for February – that's in the Provence, right in the hills of France. Apparently, the lavender is already blooming there? Well, maybe not in February, but they say the sun shines there more often than it does here. Bonnieux, Bonnie Doone – it seems people are drawn to places starting with "Bon" this time of year. Maybe it's the good wine.

So, stay warm out there! Whether it's with an aviator hat, a pilot jacket, hanging out at Bonnie Doone, or in front of the fireplace with a big art book – just make sure you get through these last days of winter okay. And who knows, maybe Bonn will manage to pull off spring after all. But until then: toque on, jacket zipped up, and off to someplace cozy!
