Well, March has really given us a final winter blast! Just when we thought spring was around the corner, Bonn suddenly gets hit with a crazy snow spell. Temperatures have plummeted, and the wind is howling like it's saying, "Not so fast, winter!" If you need to step out now, you'll need more than just a positive attitude.

Winter in Bonn: Your Guide to Beating the Chill

Yesterday, I dug out my old aviator cap – you know, the one with ear flaps that makes you look like a pilot from the 40s. And guess what? These are totally back in vogue. Brands like YUECIBAI, for instance, make really cool winter bomber hats that not only keep you warm but also add some serious style. Perfect for men, women, teens – everyone. The key thing is keeping those ears covered when you're strolling along the Rhine in Bonn.

But a cap alone won't cut it. What you really need in this weather is a seriously robust jacket. I personally swear by the JOB Winter Pilot Jacket BONN in black. It's perfectly suited for our Rhineland winter: windproof, functional, and tough enough to handle anything. A buddy of mine who works in construction lives in his. These things are practically indestructible. Here’s a quick checklist for anyone braving the outdoors:

  • Aviator cap with ear flaps – the YUECIBAI ones are great
  • Durable winter pilot jacket – like the JOB BONN in black
  • A cosy hangout like Bonnie Doone in Bad Godesberg
  • A hot cuppa and maybe browse a current art auction catalogue

Art & Culture for Those Chilly Days

When it's this dreary outside, I usually find myself heading to cosy indoor spots. There's this little pub in Bad Godesberg called Bonnie Doone. They have a fireplace and a really impressive whisky selection. They call their place a "Home away from home" – and that's exactly what it is. When the snow is pelting against the windows, you can sit inside and feel like you're in another world.

Alternatively, you can just hunker down at home. I recently found out that Sotheby's in New York is auctioning off an incredible art collection on December 5th. It includes graphic works by Daumier, Chagall, Gauguin and, of course, Bonnard – a name that always resonates here in Bonn. The collection comes from the estates of Paul L. Joachim from Chicago and Mrs. Pierce Trowbridge Wetter from New York. Yes, her last name was really Wetter – fitting for the season, right? If I had the money, I'd get one of those vibrant Bonnards on my wall. It would make forgetting Bonn's grey skies a whole lot easier.

Escape to the South of France? Holiday Home in Bonnieux

Some folks from Bonn choose to escape the winter altogether. A colleague of mine booked a holiday home in Bonnieux for February – it's in the Provence, nestled in the French hills. Apparently, the lavender is already blooming there? Well, maybe not in February, but the sun is said to shine more often than it does here. Bonnieux, Bonnie Doone – it seems people are drawn to places starting with "Bon" this time of year. Maybe it's the promise of good wine.

So, stay warm out there! Whether it's with an aviator cap, a pilot jacket, hanging out at Bonnie Doone, or relaxing by the fireplace with a hefty art book – the main thing is that you get through these last few winter days comfortably. And who knows, maybe Bonn will manage to spring forward eventually. But until then: hat on, jacket zipped, and off to find your cosy corner!
