Man, March really hit us hard out of nowhere! Just when you thought spring was around the corner, Bonn suddenly gets slammed with crazy snowfall. Temperatures have plummeted, and the wind is whipping around like it's saying, "Think again, winter's not over yet!" If you have to head out now, you're gonna need more than just a positive attitude.

Winter in Bonn: How to Brave the Cold

Yesterday, I dug out my old aviator hat – you know, the kind with earflaps that makes you look like a pilot from the 40s. And guess what? These things are totally trending again. A brand like YUECIBAI, for example, makes some seriously cool winter bomber hats that not only keep you warm but also look sharp. For men, women, teens – doesn't matter. Main thing is keeping those ears covered when you're strolling along the Rhine in Bonn.

But a hat alone won't cut it. What you really need in this weather is a seriously sturdy jacket. I personally swear by the JOB Winter Pilot Jacket BONN in black. It's practically made for our Rhineland winter: windproof, functional, and tough-looking enough to conquer any construction site. A buddy of mine who works construction swears by his. Those things are virtually indestructible. Here's a quick checklist for anyone who has to venture out:

  • Aviator hat with earflaps – preferably from YUECIBAI
  • Sturdy winter pilot jacket – like the JOB BONN in black
  • A cozy spot like the Bonnie Doone in Bad Godesberg
  • A hot tea and maybe a catalog from the latest art auction

Art and Culture for Chilly Days

When it's this miserable outside, I usually find myself drawn to cozy corners. There's this little pub in Bad Godesberg called the Bonnie Doone. They have a fireplace and a really solid whiskey selection. They call their place "Home away from home" – and that's exactly what it is. While the snow is pelting against the windows, you can sit inside and feel like you're in another world.

Or, you could just get cozy at home. I recently heard that Sotheby's in New York is auctioning off an incredible art collection on December 5th. There are graphic works by Daumier, Chagall, Gauguin, and of course by Bonnard – a name that always resonates here in Bonn. The collection comes from the estate of Paul L. Joachim of Chicago and from Mrs. Pierce Trowbridge Wetter of New York. Yep, her last name was really Wetter – fitting for the season, right? If I had the cash, I'd snag one of those colorful Bonnards to hang on my wall. It would make forgetting Bonn's grey skies a whole lot easier.

Escape to the South of France? A Vacation Rental in Bonnieux

Some Bonn locals, though, choose to flee the winter entirely. A colleague of mine rented a vacation rental in Bonnieux for February – that's in Provence, nestled in the hills of France. Apparently, the lavender is already blooming there? Well, maybe not in February, but I hear the sun makes more appearances there than it does here. Bonnieux, Bonnie Doone – seems like people are drawn to places starting with "Bon" this time of year. Maybe it's the promise of good wine.

So, stay warm out there! Whether it's with an aviator hat, a pilot jacket, hanging out at the Bonnie Doone, or curling up by the fireplace with a hefty art book – just make sure you get through these last few winter days comfortably. And who knows, maybe Bonn will actually manage to pull off spring after all. But until then: hat on, jacket zipped, and off to some coziness!
