Iran warns its neighbours: "Don't poke your finger in"

The Middle East is simmering. The latest warnings from Tehran are unequivocal: any country that gets involved in the Israeli-Iranian conflict must face the consequences. Behind the scenes, diplomacy is in overdrive, but the military preparations are impossible to ignore. Anyone who still thinks this is just another chapter in the endless Middle East conflict is vastly underestimating the situation. We may be witnessing the birth of a Second Cold War with a hot proxy war.

Israel's calculation: Playing the long game

From Jerusalem, a very different tone is heard. An Israeli minister hinted that they must prepare for "many more weeks of war." The talk is of a calculated escalation to permanently weaken Iranian positions. At the same time, the US presence is stronger than ever. From Kuwait to the Persian Gulf – military bases are on high alert. It's a web of threats and counter-threats reminiscent of the darkest days of the War on Terror.

The Afghanistan syndrome and new warfare

What many forget: the withdrawal from Afghanistan back then left a power vacuum that is now being filled with a vengeance. But this conflict is different. It's no longer a classic military engagement, but a hybrid war playing out in the shadows with cyberattacks, drones, and proxy militias. The lines between peace and war are blurring – for us in Europe, it may seem far away, but we will feel the economic consequences painfully, for instance in energy prices.

The situation is a tinderbox. One wrong spark is enough to set the entire region ablaze. Particularly precarious: the so-called Axis of Resistance, led by Iran, could open multiple fronts simultaneously. From the Lebanese border through Syria to the Houthis in Yemen – proxies lurk everywhere, ready to strike at any moment. This is the legacy of over two decades of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, where Western interventions failed and a power vacuum now prevails.

What does this mean for India?

As a nation with deep-rooted ties in the region, India is directly affected if oil prices spike, remittances are impacted, or the security situation along major trade routes deteriorates. Diplomatic efforts must be intensified now before the spiral gets out of control. Because one thing is clear: an open war between Iran and Israel would not only grip the Middle East but the entire world. Whether we call it the Israel-Iran war 2025 or something else – the clock is ticking.

The coming days will show whether reason prevails or escalation takes over. One thing is certain: the region has not learned the lessons of the past. Instead of progress, there is an arms build-up. And we have a front-row seat as the next catastrophe unfolds.

  • Hybrid Warfare: Cyber attacks, disinformation, and drones are replacing traditional battles.
  • New Alliances: Russia and China are watching the conflict closely – another piece in the Second Cold War puzzle.
  • Oil & Gas: Europe's energy supply hangs by a thread should the Strait of Hormuz be blocked, impacting global prices felt acutely in India.

Whether the peacemakers or the sabre-rattlers win in the end is uncertain. What is certain is that the world is holding its breath. And we here in India should brace for turbulent times, especially concerning energy security and the safety of the millions of Indians living and working in the Gulf region.
