There's something about the capybara. Maybe it's that eternally chilled-out expression, or the way it seems to be best mates with every other animal in the jungle. It’s become a symbol of calm, an internet meme, and, for many Brits, a beloved friend in the form of a soft toy. Which is why it feels so surreal to hear the news of the brutal attack that has shaken Brazil over the past few days.

Brutal attack in Brazil: The world's largest rodent becomes a target

It was the night leading into Tuesday when the image of the serene capybara (or Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, to be precise) took a dark turn. Outside a bar in western Brazil, an animal was subjected to a vile attack. A group of eight people are alleged to have beaten the animal. The incident is so serious that Brazilian police have now arrested those involved. This isn't the first time I've come across stories like this, but the shock never lessens. The animal was reportedly taken to a vet for treatment, and I'm keeping everything crossed that it pulls through.

For those of us sitting here in safe, comfortable Britain, it might feel a world away, but the sense of disgust and sadness is universal. The capybara is, after all, an icon – not just for its size as the world's largest rodent, but for its unique, sociable nature. They live in family groups and are known for being incredibly tolerant. It's precisely what makes them so charming – that unshakeable calm – that probably made this particular animal an easy target for the brutality of those individuals.

From jungle charmer to British living rooms

It’s almost as if you have to remind yourself that the capybara isn’t just a symbol of harmony, but a real, living creature. In recent years, it has made an incredible journey into our homes, far from the South American riverbanks. Here in the UK, it's become a favourite in a very different way. Perhaps it's the stress of everyday life that draws us to its relaxed aura. I see them everywhere.

  • BUILD-A-BEAR capybara soft toy 28 cm: It's become a bit of a classic now. Being able to create your own friend with that cheeky grin is an experience many kids (and adults) love. It’s the perfect size for a cuddle when life gets heavy.
  • Squeeze stress toy capybara: That satisfying, squishy feeling when you give it a squeeze. It’s exactly how you want a capybara to be – the perfect antidote to everything that’s hard and stressful.
  • EUGY 3D cardboard model – Capybara: For those who like to get crafty, there’s the 3D model. Putting it together piece by piece is almost a form of meditation. You build your own little capybara, a reminder to take it easy.

The contrast is striking. Here at home, we're building models of them, squeezing toy versions, and snuggling up with them on the sofa. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the real-life version has been subjected to an unprovoked, hateful act against an animal. It makes me think about our relationship with nature. We love the image of the capybara, the laid-back influencer from the jungle, but we easily forget that it's an animal that deserves respect, not just a spot in a selfie or a place in a collection.

What happens now? A reminder to respect animals

The police investigation in Brazil is now moving forward. Eight people have been arrested and are being investigated for animal cruelty, a crime that I understand Brazil has started to take more seriously in recent years. Hopefully, this will lead to a conviction. It's small comfort in an otherwise tragic story. But for us back home, it can also serve as a reminder. Next time you see a Capybara in any form, whether as an EUGY 3D cardboard model or a BUILD-A-BEAR soft toy, perhaps you'll also think of it as a tribute to one of the most fascinating animals we have on this planet.

We can't undo what happened, but we can continue to spread awareness about them. For me personally, that Squeeze stress toy capybara becomes a little more than just a toy now. It becomes a symbol of something we must protect – respect for life, whether that life is bigger than a wild boar or looks like the world’s most chilled-out friend. Hang in there, little capybara. We're rooting for you.
