There’s something special about the capybara. Maybe it’s the eternally chilled-out expression, or the way it seems to be best mates with every other animal in the jungle. It’s become a symbol of calm, an internet meme, and for many Swedes, a beloved friend in the form of a soft toy. Which is why it feels extra surreal to hear the news of the brutal attack that’s shaken Brazil over the past few days.

Brutal attack in Brazil: World’s largest rodent becomes a target

It was the night leading into Tuesday when the image of the laid-back capybara (or Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, to be precise) took on a dark shadow. Outside a bar in western Brazil, an animal was subjected to a horrific attack. It involves a group of eight people who are alleged to have abused the animal. The incident is so serious that Brazilian police have now arrested those involved. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen similar stories, but the shock never lessens. The animal was reportedly taken to a vet for treatment, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed it pulls through.

For us sitting here in safe Sweden, it might feel far away, but the sense of disgust and sadness is universal. The capybara is, after all, an icon – not just for its size as the world’s largest rodent, but for its unique, sociable nature. They live in family groups and are known for being extremely tolerant. And that very quality that makes them so charming – that unshakeable calm – likely made this animal an easy target for these people’s brutality.

From jungle charmer to Swedish living rooms

You almost have to remind yourself that the capybara isn’t just a symbol of harmony, but a real, living creature. In recent years, it’s made a huge journey into our homes, far from the South American riverbanks. Here in Sweden, it’s become a favourite in a whole different way. Maybe it’s the stress of everyday life that makes us gravitate towards its relaxed vibe. I see them everywhere.

  • BUILD-A-BEAR capybara plush 28cm: It’s practically a classic now. Getting to create your own mate with that cheeky grin is an experience heaps of kids (and adults) love. It’s the perfect size for cuddling when life feels a bit heavy.
  • Squeeze stress toy capybara: That satisfying, squishy feeling when you give it a squeeze. It’s exactly how you want the capybara to be – the opposite of everything that’s hard and stressful.
  • EUGY 3D cardboard model – Capybara: For those who are more into crafts, there’s the 3D model. Putting it together piece by piece is almost like meditation. You build your own little capybara, a reminder to take it easy.

This contrast is striking. Here at home, we’re building models of it, squeezing toy versions, and cuddling with it on the couch. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the real version is being subjected to an unprovoked hate crime against an animal. It makes me think about our relationship with nature. We love the image of the capybara, the relaxed influencer from the jungle, but we easily forget that it’s an animal deserving of respect – not just a spot in a selfie or a collector’s item.

What happens now? A reminder about respecting animals

The police investigation in Brazil is now moving forward. Eight people have been arrested and are being investigated for animal cruelty, a crime that I know Brazil has started taking more seriously in recent years. Hopefully, this will lead to a conviction. It’s a small consolation in an otherwise tragic story. But for us back home, it can also serve as a reminder. Next time you see a capybara in any form, whether it’s an EUGY 3D cardboard model or a BUILD-A-BEAR plush toy, maybe you’ll also think about it as a tribute to one of the most fascinating animals we have on this planet.

We can’t undo what’s happened, but we can keep spreading the word about them. For me personally, that Squeeze stress toy capybara becomes a little more than just a toy now. It becomes a symbol of something we need to protect – respect for life, whether that life is bigger than a wild boar or just looks like the world’s calmest mate. Hang in there, little capybara. We’re rooting for you.
