Denza Z9GT on its European debut in Paris

A lot has happened in the automotive world over the past week. While the German giants are still trying to figure out what’s hitting them, China’s BYD is rolling out its premium line, Denza, across Europe. The debut took place right at the Palais Garnier in Paris – a venue that oozes elegance, exactly the vibe this brand wants to be associated with. And you know what? This is just the beginning of a story that could rewrite the rules of the premium segment.

A dramatic debut with record-breaking claims

The date was April 8. Stella Li, head of BYD’s passenger car division, stood on the opera house’s famous staircase and unveiled two models for the European audience: the Denza Z9GT and the Denza D9 DM-i. The former is a shooting brake that, on paper, absolutely obliterates rivals like the Porsche Taycan. We’re talking 0–100 km/h in 2.7 seconds for the all-electric version. The power? Over 1,100 horsepower.

But the numbers that are really turning heads are all about charging. Flash Charging is the tech – and it delivers. According to internal sources on the ground, you can charge the Z9GT from 10 to 70 percent in five minutes. Yes, you read that right. Five minutes. From 10 to 97 percent takes nine minutes. And even in the depths of a Canadian winter, where many EVs see their charging speeds drop dramatically, the tech promises 20 to 97 percent in twelve minutes.

  • Z9GT Electric: 1,156 hp, 0–100 in 2.7 seconds, approx. €115,000
  • Z9GT DM-i (Super Hybrid): 776 hp, 0–100 in 3.6 seconds, approx. €102,000
  • D9 DM-i (MPV): 353 hp, 130 km electric + 950 km total range

And for those of us following the tech developments up close, there’s a detail that’s almost more important than everything else: the Denza B5 is on its way. The platform that underpins the Z9GT, the so-called Yi San Fang technology, has already shown what it can do with four-wheel steering that lets the car move like a crab in tight spaces. It feels like science fiction, but it’s happening right now.

More than just cars – an ecosystem

BYD isn’t stopping with the vehicles. At the same time as Denza rolls out across the continent, they’re building a network of charging stations. The goal is 3,000 Flash Charging stations in Europe within a year. That’s a massive investment that could make range anxiety a thing of the past. Imagine driving from Vancouver to Seattle, stopping for a 10-minute coffee, and then hitting the road with a full battery. That’s the future BYD is selling.

And they’re bringing in the right people to get there. Last week, it was confirmed that several top executives from Porsche have jumped ship to Denza. Lorenzo Soravia, formerly Porsche’s sales chief, is now leading the brand’s expansion in Southern Europe. In total, over 50 people have been recruited from various European luxury automakers. They see that something big is happening.

The meaning behind the name – an unexpected connection

The name Denza is, of course, carefully chosen. But for those of us who love music history, it brings another association to mind. Luigi Denza was the Italian composer behind the eternally cheerful Neapolitan song "Funiculì, Funiculà." His melody has lived on for over a century – an anthem to joy and forward momentum. There’s something poetic about a car brand that wants to move us forward sharing that same name. And for those who dig deeper, there’s the band Denzal Sinclaire, a name that carries the same rebellious, boundary-pushing spirit. It’s about daring to be different. Much like Ashfall Legacy, the game that took the gaming world by storm last year – a story about rising from the ashes and building something new. Maybe that’s exactly what we’re witnessing in the auto industry right now.

Canada – ready for Denza?

For us in Canada, the question is, of course: when are these cars coming here? The official line is that Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK are first in line. But BYD has already started recruiting a Head of Sales for Denza in Toronto. That’s a clear sign that Canada is on the map. With our high rate of electrification and a population that quickly embraces new tech, we’re a perfect market for this kind of vehicle.

I’ve followed BYD’s journey from their first batteries to today’s luxury push. The difference from just a few years ago is night and day. They’ve learned, honed their craft, and now they’re launching an assault on the finest brands out there. Denza is no longer a China secret. It’s a global challenge. The question is whether the establishment in Stuttgart and Munich is ready for what’s coming. Because this is just the beginning.
