Police at a pram in Haderslev

It's not every morning you wake up in Haderslev thinking today will be the day everything changes. But for one family near Haderslevhus, Monday morning marked the start of every parent's absolute worst nightmare. A seven-month-old baby was snatched from their pram while sleeping. I've spoken to several people in the area today, and one thing's for sure: The whole town is in a state of collective shock.

A safe neighbourhood shattered in an instant

It all unfolded in a quiet residential area, just a stone's throw from the historic buildings at Haderslevhus and not far from where Haderslev Auktion holds its well-known events. The mum had done what she'd done hundreds of times before: put her sleeping baby outside in the pram for some fresh air. But when she checked moments later, the baby was gone. The pram was empty. The panic she must have felt is almost indescribable. This isn't something you read about happening in far-off places – this happened right here, in our own backyard.

Why the whole of Southern Jutland is holding its breath

Police acted fast, cordoning off large parts of the area. The search is intensive, I understand from sources close to the investigation. They're combing through CCTV footage from homes and shops near Haderslev and are going door-to-door. No stone is being left unturned. But what really struck me today is the reaction from the townsfolk. This is where local solidarity truly shines:

  • Neighbours rallying: People are sharing info and footage from their own security cameras, hoping to find even a single clue.
  • Volunteers stepping up: Groups have already independently offered to search the woods and paths leading down to the water.
  • The town is talking: At the grocery store, on the bus, in the street – everyone's talking about it. "This is the kind of thing that happens in big cities," one elderly man told me. I've heard that exact phrase over and over today.

Haderslev Ugeavis has, of course, dedicated most of its coverage to the case, and word around town is that the family is receiving all the support they could possibly need.

What's needed now?

Right now, the sole focus is bringing that little one home safe. The investigation continues around the clock. Did you see anything unusual this morning in the Haderslev area? Maybe someone carrying something, or a car driving off in a hurry? It's often those small details that crack a case wide open. Keep your eyes peeled, and hold your loved ones close. Haderslev is a safe town – and today, we're all fighting to get that sense of safety back.
