Police at a pram in Haderslev

It's not often you wake up in Haderslev thinking this will be the day that changes everything. But for one family near Haderslevhus, Monday morning marked the start of every parent's worst nightmare. A seven-month-old baby was abducted from their pram while sleeping. I've spoken with several locals today, and one thing's for sure: this town is in a state of collective shock.

A sense of safety shattered in an instant

The incident unfolded in a quiet residential cul-de-sac, just a stone's throw from the historic buildings at Haderslevhus and not far from where Haderslev Auktion holds its well-known events. The mum had done what she'd done hundreds of times before: put her sleeping baby outside in the pram for some fresh air. But when she checked moments later, the child was gone. The pram, empty. The panic she must have felt is almost indescribable. This isn't something you read about happening in far-off places – it's happened right here, in our own backyard.

Why all of Southern Jutland is holding its breath

Police acted quickly, cordoning off large parts of the area. The search is intensive, I've gathered from sources close to the investigation. They're combing through CCTV footage from homes and shops near Haderslev and are doing door-to-door inquiries. No stone is being left unturned. But what's really struck me today is the response from the town's residents. This is where the local community spirit truly shines:

  • Neighbours rallying together: People are sharing information and footage from their private cameras, hoping to find any clue at all.
  • Volunteers stepping up: Groups have already formed, independently offering to search the forests and paths down towards the water.
  • The town is talking: At the local dairy, on the bus, in the street – everyone's talking about it. "This is the kind of thing that happens in big cities," one elderly man said to me. I've heard that exact sentiment echoed time and time again.

Haderslev Ugeavis has, of course, dedicated most of its coverage to the case, and word on the street is the family is receiving all the support they could possibly need.

What's needed now?

Right now, the sole focus is on bringing this little one home safely. The investigation is continuing around the clock. Did you see anything out of the ordinary this morning in the Haderslev area? Perhaps someone carrying something, or a car leaving in a hurry? It's often the smallest details that can crack a case wide open. Keep your eyes peeled and look out for one another. Haderslev is a safe community – and today, we're all fighting to get that sense of safety back.
