Miyakojima Travel Guide: New Hilton & Rosewood Hotels Open, Don Quijote Arrives, and Local Food Highlights
My phone’s photo album recently popped up a picture from a few years ago of Yonaha Maehama Beach in Miyakojima. That stretch of white sand, often called the “most beautiful in the East,” paired with water so clear it looks like jelly, had me itching to go back. Just as I opened a booking site, thinking of a spontaneous last-minute getaway this weekend, I realised that Miyakojima today is completely different from the laid-back island I remember. Several top-tier hotels have opened one after another, and our old favourite, Don Quijote, has quietly made its way here too. It seems the island is going through a major upgrade. Today, let’s dive into what’s new on this, my personal favourite Okinawan outlying island.
Staying with Dreamy Ocean Views: New Hilton and Rosewood Properties
In the past, accommodation options in Miyakojima were mostly a few established resorts or minshuku (guesthouses). While they had local charm, options felt a bit limited if you were looking for a touch of luxury. But it’s a whole new ballgame now! First up is the Hilton Okinawa Miyakojima Resort. This new hotel, which officially opened last year, is located right beside the Irabu Bridge. The views are so fantastic, you could easily spend a whole day just gazing from the lobby. I’d personally recommend their infinity pool. Soaking in the water while watching the sunset slowly sink below the horizon – it’s truly priceless. The rooms are sleek and modern, cleverly bringing in the island’s natural light and stunning blue seascape for a wonderfully comfortable stay.
If you’re willing to stretch your budget, then you definitely need to check out the Rosewood Miyakojima. This ultra-luxury resort, which quietly opened earlier this year, embodies understated elegance. The Rosewood group has chosen a secluded bay in southern Miyakojima to create a private, secluded estate. A friend who just returned from there last month said the amenities in the room, the comfort of the bed, and the attentive, butler-level service made every penny worthwhile. The private beach here, in particular, sees few visitors, making it easy to find your own little corner and enjoy true tranquility.
Not Chasing the New? The Locals Love Hotel Atoll Emerald
Of course, if you’re like me and sometimes prefer places with a touch of nostalgia and warm, personal service, you shouldn’t miss another classic – Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima. This hotel is in central Miyakojima, in a super convenient location right next to Don Quijote Miyakojima and within walking distance. While it isn’t as new as the other two, its service and cleanliness have always been top-notch, earning it a stellar reputation on the island. I really love their breakfast buffet, where you can enjoy authentic Okinawan dishes like Miyakojima-style Miyako soba and stews made with local ingredients. That homely, heartwarming taste is one of the reasons I fell in love with Miyakojima.
A Shopper’s New Paradise: Don Quijote Miyakojima Store Arrives
Talking about Don Quijote Miyakojima – this is definitely the biggest buzz on the island this year! Before, souvenir shopping in Miyakojima usually meant hitting the public market or little roadside shops. While they had character, it wasn’t as convenient if you wanted to grab some drugstore items or had a late-night snack craving. Now with Don Quijote open, the convenience factor has shot through the roof! It’s located right along Miyakojima’s main road, about a three-minute walk from Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima. The store not only has the familiar drugstore goods, snacks, and daily necessities but also plenty of Miyakojima-exclusive souvenirs. You can find everything in one go, from awamori (local liquor) and sweet potato tarts to cookies made with the island’s specialty “yukishio” (snow salt). For someone like me who loves filling their suitcase to bursting before heading home, it’s a godsend.
- Must-Buy Highlights: Beyond the usual snacks, keep an eye out for Don Quijote’s own brand items labelled “Miyakojima Exclusive”. Some are made with local ingredients and can’t be found elsewhere.
- Maximum Convenience: Open late into the night, perfect for spending the day by the water and doing a relaxed shopping run in the evening without worrying about closing time.
- A Must for Drivers: There’s a large parking lot right next to it, making it super convenient for travellers exploring the island by car.
Beyond the Beach: Deeper Ways to Experience Miyakojima
Many people come to Miyakojima for the sea, and rightly so. The water clarity here is so incredible it’ll amaze even seasoned divers. But I feel Miyakojima now offers more in terms of “land-based” experiences. For example, renting a car is popular not just to hit tourist spots, but simply to enjoy the feeling of cruising around the island. Driving across the Irabu Bridge, rolling down all the windows, and feeling the ocean breeze – that sense of freedom is the soul of Miyakojima.
Also, the café culture on the island is becoming more established. Finding a cool café used to take some effort, but now in central Miyakojima or along the coast, there are many unique, character-filled spots. Some are renovated old houses, others are built right on the beach. Ordering a black coffee brewed with Miyakojima coffee beans, paired with a house-made dessert, while gazing out at the azure sea – that’s the ultimate luxury holiday moment.
If you haven’t been to Miyakojima yet, now is absolutely the best time. From the major upgrade in accommodations to the improved shopping options, the travel experience on this island is now richer and more comfortable than ever. It’s no longer just an island to see the sea; it’s a perfect holiday paradise blending stunning scenery, great food, comfortable stays, and shopping fun. I’m already checking flight prices – how about you?
