Spring begins in Vienna

G'day, folks! Did you get your face out in the sun this morning? Right on cue for the astronomical start of spring, Vienna is showing off its best side. The air smells of fresh grass, the first crocuses are popping up in the gardens – and today the thermometer is climbing to a pleasant 14 degrees. No wonder Viennese are flocking outside. I hopped on my bike for a spin around the city. And it struck me: this spring is shaping up to be a cracker. Between tennis rackets, the aroma of schnitzel, and the buzz around the new central station, there's a real vibe in the air.

Wall-to-wall sunshine and the first outdoor events

Honestly, if you're still stuck in the office today, you're missing out! The weather folks are promising clear blue skies right through till evening – perfect for a stroll through the Prater or a flat white in a street-side cafe. I sat out in the sun and took it all in: the city is waking from its winter slumber, and you can feel the energy returning. If this weather keeps up, March could be a record-breaker for sunshine. Here's to the warm breeze clearing out the last of the winter gloom!

Game, set, match: ATP Vienna is coming

For all you sports fans out there: the ATP tournament at the Stadthalle is coming up in the next few weeks. Preparations are in full swing, and the first top stars have already signed up. I've heard the organisers have upped the ante this year with more supporting events – including public viewing at Schmelz and a kids' day. The anticipation is building, for sure. So if you're keen to grab tickets, you'd better get in quick. Nothing beats the atmosphere when the ball flies over the net at 150 km/h and the crowd goes wild. I'll definitely be there!

Where to find the best Vienna schnitzel in town?

Of course, this weather works up an appetite. And what goes better with a day out in Vienna than an authentic Vienna schnitzel? I've done the hard yards and sampled a few places – you don't have to (but hey, someone's gotta do it). My current favourites:

  • Zum schwarzen Kameel on Graben: classy, thinly crumbed, served with cranberries. Absolutely divine.
  • Figlmüller on Wollzeile: the classic, the schnitzel hangs over the edge of the plate. A must-see.
  • Gasthaus Pöschl on Weihburggasse: down-to-earth, rustic, and the portions are massive. Perfect after a long walk.

Top tip: Order it with potato salad – not fries, or you'll get a funny look from the waiter.

Vienna Central Station: More than just a stopover

There's been a real transformation at Vienna Central Station over the last few years. What was once a dusty construction site is now a proper little suburb in its own right. I was there the other day picking up a mate from the train and ended up sticking around. All the new shops, the cafes, and that stunning view of the city from the shopping centre rooftop – it's pretty special. And seeing how many people arrive by train and just dive straight into city life, it hits you: the Central Station has well and truly become the new heart of Vienna. So if you're arriving on the weekend, you're right in the thick of it from the get-go.

Wienerberger: The red soul of the city

Now, you might be thinking: what's a brick manufacturer got to do with spring? Simple: without Wienerberger, the Vienna we know and love simply wouldn't exist. Those red bricks from Wienerberg have shaped our cityscape for over 200 years. From the Belvedere Palace to the community housing estates – you'll find a piece of this company everywhere. I drove past the factory site recently, and there's something comforting about it: some things just stay constant, while everything around them changes. And spring brings new life to those old walls – the first flowers are popping up between the brick stacks, and all's right with the world.

So, get out there and soak up the sun, enjoy the day, and take it easy. Vienna in spring is simply unbeatable – and we're right in the middle of it.
