Spring begins in Vienna

Howiya, folks! Did you get your face out in the sun this morning? Right on time for the astronomical start of spring, Vienna is showing off its best side. The air smells of fresh grass, the first crocuses are popping up in the flowerbeds – and today the thermometer is set to hit a lovely 14 degrees. No wonder the Viennese are flocking outside like bees to honey. I hopped on my bike for a spin around the city myself. And one thing struck me: there's a real buzz about this spring. Between the tennis rackets, the aroma of schnitzel, and the hubbub around the new main station, there's plenty going on.

Wall-to-Wall Sunshine and the First Outdoor Hits

Look, if you're still stuck in the office today, there's just no helping you! The forecast is promising clear blue skies right through till evening – perfect for a stroll through the Prater or a melange in a pavement café. I sat out in the sun and took it all in: the city is waking from its winter slumber, and you can really feel the spirits lifting. If this weather holds, March could be record-breakingly sunny. Here's to the foehn wind clearing all the cobwebs out of the sky!

Game, Set, Match: ATP Vienna is Coming to Town

For all you sports fans out there: the ATP tournament at the Stadthalle is on the horizon in the coming weeks. Preparations are in full swing, and the first top stars have already signed up. I hear the organisers have even more of a fringe programme laid on this year – with public viewing up on Schmelz and a kids' day. The anticipation is definitely building. So, if you're hoping to snag tickets, you'd best get a move on. There's nothing quite like the atmosphere when the ball flies over the net at 150 km/h and the crowd goes wild. I'll definitely be there!

Where to Find the Best Vienna Schnitzel in the City?

Of course, all this weather works up a fair appetite. And what goes better with a day out in Vienna than an original Wiener Schnitzel? I've done the hard yards sampling a few places – you don't have to, of course (but sure, someone's got to do the legwork). My current top picks:

  • Zum schwarzen Kameel on the Graben: classy, thinly breaded, served with lingonberries. An absolute poem.
  • Figlmüller on Wollzeile: The classic – the schnitzel hangs right over the edge of the plate. You have to see it to believe it.
  • Gasthaus Pöschl on Weihburggasse: down-to-earth, cosy, and the portions are massive. Perfect after a long walk.

Top tip: Order it with potato salad – not chips, or you'll get a right look from the waiter.

Vienna Central Station: More Than Just a Stopover

There's been a fair bit of development around Vienna Central Station in recent years. What was once a dusty construction site is now a proper little neighbourhood in its own right. I was there recently picking a friend up from the train and ended up hanging around. All the new shops, the cafes, and that stunning view of the city from the shopping centre rooftop – it's really something. And seeing the crowds arriving by train, ready to dive straight into city life, it hits you: the main station has well and truly become the new heart of Vienna. So, if you're arriving at the weekend, you're smack bang in the middle of it all.

Wienerberger: The Red Soul of the City

Now, you might be wondering: what's a brick manufacturer got to do with spring? Well, quite simply: without Wienerberger, the Vienna we know and love wouldn't exist at all. Those red bricks from Wienerberg have shaped our cityscape for over 200 years. From the Belvedere Palace to the council flats – you'll find a piece of this company everywhere. I drove past the factory site recently, and there's something strangely reassuring about it: some things just stay constant, even while everything around them changes. And spring brings new life to these old walls – the first flowers are popping up between the brick stacks, and all's right with the world.

So, get yourselves out in the sun, enjoy the day, and take it easy. Vienna in spring is simply unbeatable – and we're right in the thick of it.
