A train on the Senriki Line

It's been 14 years since that day. Standing on the platform at Sendai Station today, March 14th, the usual departure melody mixes with a certain solemnity in the air. On this day of remembrance for the Great East Japan Earthquake and renewed pledges for recovery, the Senriki Line continues to connect Sendai and Ishinomaki as it always has. Even the sections that suffered devastating damage from the tsunami are alive and well, running alongside relocated tracks and the ongoing revival of the towns.

The Senriki Line, 14 Years On: Everyday Life is the Proof of Recovery

The earthquake in 2011 caused viaducts to collapse near Nobiru, and the tracks were swallowed by the tsunami. For someone from this area who witnessed that scene firsthand, seeing the trains running normally now is the most powerful proof of recovery. Looking out from the sections relocated inland, you can see new housing developments and well-maintained roads, making you truly feel that this is what recovery looks like.

When I went out to Rikuzen-Otsuka last weekend for the first time in a while, I saw people visiting the earthquake ruins preserved at the old Nobiru Station. While passing on the memory that must not fade, the line itself continues to run strong. I think this resilience is the greatest charm of the Senriki Line.

Bringing the Senriki Line Home: The Excitement Around KATO's New Product

Here's some great news for railway fans who want to feel closer to the Senriki Line of today. The renowned model train manufacturer, KATO, has just released the "10-911 New 103 Series Senriki Line Color Type N-Gauge 4-Car Set". I bet many of you were thinking, "Finally!"

This model is more than just a model train. It beautifully recreates the orange and green two-tone livery you see on the current Senriki Line. And the attention to detail is incredible. As a local, just imagining it running on an N-Gauge layout with its headlights on makes my heart swell with pride.

  • Authentic Livery: Faithfully reproduces the current Senriki Line colours. The shades are just like the real thing.
  • Lighting: Headlights and taillights illuminate. Night runs look exceptionally atmospheric.
  • Smooth Operation: Features a flywheel-equipped power unit for stable running.
  • 4-Car Formation: A compact set that still perfectly captures the essence of the Senriki Line.

I spoke to a local hobby shop owner, and apparently, pre-orders for this set flooded in even before its release. He mentioned that more and more young people who don't remember the earthquake are also picking it up, interested in the Senriki Line of today. It makes sense. You can run the Senriki Line right there in your own home, and in doing so, keep the memory of that disaster and the story of its recovery alive. Perhaps this represents a new way of passing on that heritage.

The Tracks Connect to the Future

14 years after the disaster. Today, at stations across Sendai, moments of silence were observed, with many people remembering the victims and renewing their hopes for reconstruction. The Senriki Line, as a symbol of that everyday life, continues to run unchanged. And the N-Gauge Senriki Line running on layouts at home will also become a small bearer of that memory and routine, carrying them into the future.

Remembering that day through models. And enjoying the recovered present. I can't help but feel that this new culture is spreading from Sendai.
