Resident Evil Requiem: The buzz that's bringing the saga and its zombies back to life

Resident Evil Requiem: The phantom project haunting gamers
Have you also seen the Resident Evil Requiem hashtag popping up on your feed? For the past few weeks, a rumour has been setting the community on fire: Capcom is supposedly working on a new instalment called Resident Evil Requiem. Some are calling it a remake of the fourth game, others reckon it's a brand-new episode focused on cult favourite characters. One thing's for sure: survival horror fans are already drooling. And honestly, after the massive success of the Resident Evil 2 and remakes, we'd be fools not to believe it.
Easter eggs too big to be a coincidence
The real fuel for the fire is this whole easter egg business. Capcom has always loved slipping in little nods to fans, but this time, some see it as a clumsy love confession. On forums, eagle-eyed players have spotted a document in Resident Evil Village mentioning something called the "Requiem protocol." Coincidence? Probably not. Others swear they heard a zombie nurse mutter "Requiem" in a hallway of the Resident Evil 4 Remake. Okay, maybe your ears start playing tricks on you after ten hours of gameplay, but the idea is catching on. What if Capcom has been dropping hints right under our noses for months?
Zombies never go out of style: Why we keep coming back for more
The undead are a bit like that classic comfort food: the more intense they are, the more we love them. A recent analysis reminded us that zombies are eternal because they tap into our most primal fears – disease, an uncontrollable mob, the end of the world. From the very first Resident Evil on the PlayStation to today's super-polished versions, the recipe hasn't changed: creaky doors, scarce ammo, and that feeling of being completely alone facing down horror. Resident Evil Requiem could totally plunge us back into that, with a heaping dose of nostalgia.
What we'd love to see in this new chapter
If the rumour turns out to be true, here’s my wishlist (and I'm pretty sure you'll agree):
- A return to the roots with fixed camera angles and tank controls, for that pure 1998-style scare factor.
- Those silly but brilliant puzzles, like placing three statues in the right order to unlock a door.
- A solid nod to Resident Evil 4, but without overdoing it – we don't want another disguised remake.
- Slow but terrifying zombies, not sprinters who are on your tail in two seconds flat.
- A soundtrack that makes you want to sleep with the lights on.
Is Capcom going overboard with its in-jokes?
Look, we love easter eggs. But when every nook and cranny of a game becomes a treasure hunt, you start missing the main point: pure, unadulterated dread. Some fans are accusing Capcom of laying it on too thick with these hidden messages, to the point where Resident Evil Requiem might feel more like a meta-puzzle than a proper horror game. My take? As long as the heart is in the right place, we're in. But the studio shouldn't start thinking it's M. Night Shyamalan with a twist around every corner.
While we wait for an official announcement – which could very well drop during the next showcase – we'll keep dissecting every image, every trailer, every rumour. And if Resident Evil Requiem doesn't exist, we'll just have to invent it. Because that's what being a fan is all about, really: hoping that the zombies never truly die.
