Scenery of Yamagata University's Kojirakawa Campus

Having lived in Yamagata for decades, you really get a feel for how the city changes. Through it all, standing strong yet constantly bringing in fresh new energy, is Yamagata University. For us locals, it’s much more than just another "national university"—it's a familiar and cherished part of the community. Today, I want to take you on a tour of Yamagata University’s appeal, from a local's perspective, through spots you won't find in any tourist guide.

A Campus That Blends into the City: The Four Seasons at Kojirakawa

First up is the Yamagata University Kojirakawa Campus. Just a 15-minute walk from JR Yamagata Station, this campus is right in the heart of the city. As the main campus housing the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Science, it's always buzzing with student energy. In spring, the avenue of cherry trees on campus is absolutely breathtaking. During cherry blossom season, it becomes a popular, if somewhat hidden, local spot where residents flock to enjoy the view. Even outside of open campus events, being able to casually stroll through is what makes Kojirakawa so special to those of us living nearby.

A Cornerstone of Community Health: The University Hospital

Next, we absolutely can't skip the Yamagata University Hospital. Known as one of the top medical institutions in the Tohoku region, it draws patients not just from within Yamagata prefecture but also from neighbouring ones. Its emergency care system is particularly robust, and I've lost count of how many acquaintances have told me they were saved by the doctors there. For local people, it's more than just a hospital; it's a real symbol of reassurance in times of need. With some of the wards recently rebuilt, the facilities are top-notch, providing access to cutting-edge medical care.

Supporting the Shonai Food Paradise: Tsuruoka Campus and the Faculty of Agriculture

What comes to mind when you think of Yamagata? Cherries? La France pears? Or maybe the rice? That's right, Yamagata is a true foodie's paradise. And at the heart of it all is the Yamagata University Faculty of Agriculture. Moving from the main campus in Kojirakawa over to the Sea of Japan side, its base is at the Yamagata University Tsuruoka Campus, nestled within the Shonai Plain. Here, research is conducted in agriculture, bioresources, and even cutting-edge life sciences. There's a lot of collaboration with local farmers, and I've heard they've played a part in improving the quality of Tsuruoka's signature brand vegetable, "Dadacha-mame" (edamame). With another campus in Sakata City, it really feels like the entire Shonai region is a "university town."

A Rich and Concentrated "Learning Environment"

Beyond Yamagata University itself, the area around Yamagata City is packed with learning institutions.

  • Kojirakawa Campus: The hub for humanities and social sciences. Excellent access to the city centre, and the surrounding student quarter has a lively, fun atmosphere.
  • University Hospital: A high-level medical cornerstone supporting the health of the prefecture's residents.
  • Tsuruoka Campus: A place pursuing cutting-edge agriculture and life sciences amidst abundant nature—it feels almost like a research fortress.
  • And together with nearby institutions like Tohoku Bunkyo University and Yamagata Johoku High School, the whole area forms a serene and dedicated "learning environment."

Tohoku Bunkyo University is located in the western part of Yamagata City, while Yamagata Johoku High School is close to the Kojirakawa Campus. It seems this proximity naturally fosters interaction between students from different schools.

Honestly, I wonder what image people from outside the prefecture have of Yamagata University. For those of us who live here, it's woven into the fabric of daily life and is a true source of local pride. I look forward to continuing to watch it grow alongside our community here in Yamagata.
