Scenery of Yamagata University's Kojirakawa Campus

Having lived in Yamagata for decades, you get a real feel for how the city changes. Through it all, one presence stands firm yet always brings a fresh breeze to the area: Yamagata University. For us locals, it's more than just a "national university"; it's a familiar and cherished part of our community. Today, I'd like to take you on a local's tour of Yamagata University's charms, hitting the spots you won't find in any tourist guidebook.

A Campus Blending into the City: The Four Seasons at Kojirakawa

First up is Yamagata University's Kojirakawa Campus. Located about a 15-minute walk from JR Yamagata Station, this campus is right in the heart of the city. As the main campus housing the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, and Science, it's always buzzing with student energy. In spring, the campus's cherry blossom avenue is simply breathtaking. During cherry blossom viewing season, it becomes a hidden gem where locals flock. What locals love about Kojirakawa Campus is that you can just drop by for a casual stroll, even when there's no official event like an open campus.

The Fortress Protecting Our Prefecture's Health: The Faculty of Medicine Hospital

Next, an absolute must-mention is the Yamagata University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. Known as one of the top medical institutions in the Tohoku region, it draws patients not only from within Yamagata Prefecture but also from neighbouring prefectures. Their emergency medical system is particularly robust, and I've lost count of how many acquaintances have told me, "The doctors there saved me that time." For us locals, it's not just a hospital; it's a "symbol of security" for when emergencies strike. With newly rebuilt wards, it's equipped to provide cutting-edge medical care.

Supporting the Food Hub of Shonai: Tsuruoka Campus and the Faculty of Agriculture

What comes to mind when you think of Yamagata? Cherries? La France pears? Or maybe the rice? That's right, Yamagata is a treasure trove of food. At the heart of this is Yamagata University's Faculty of Agriculture. Moving from the main campus in Kojirakawa over to the Sea of Japan side, you'll find its base at Yamagata University's Tsuruoka Campus, nestled in the Shonai Plain. Here, research is conducted in agriculture, bioresources, and even cutting-edge life sciences. There's a lot of collaboration with local farmers, and I've heard they play a part in improving the quality of Tsuruoka's brand vegetable, "Dadacha beans." With a campus also in Sakata City, the whole Shonai region really feels like a "university town."

A Compact and Rich "Learning Environment"

Beyond Yamagata University itself, the area around Yamagata City is packed with learning institutions.

  • Kojirakawa Campus: The hub for humanities and social sciences. Excellent access to the city centre, and the vibrant student district atmosphere is a lot of fun.
  • Faculty of Medicine Hospital: A top-tier medical cornerstone supporting the health of the prefecture's residents.
  • Tsuruoka Campus: A place pursuing cutting-edge agriculture and life sciences amidst rich nature – it feels like a research fortress.
  • And including nearby schools like Tohoku Bunkyo University and Yamagata Johoku High School, the entire region forms a tranquil and enriching "learning environment."

Tohoku Bunkyo University is located in the western part of Yamagata City, while Yamagata Johoku High School is near the Kojirakawa Campus, so natural interaction between university and high school students seems to occur organically.

Honestly, I wonder what image people from outside the prefecture have of Yamagata University? From a local's perspective, it's woven into the fabric of daily life and is a source of pride for this land. I look forward to continuing to watch it grow and evolve together with our community, right here in Yamagata.
