Tagajo in Summer: Your Guide to Sunflowers, Local Hidden Gems, Parks, and Hotels
Summer has officially arrived in Tagajo, Miyagi, right on cue with the end of the rainy season. As a local, one of the highlights I eagerly await each year is the spectacular bloom of the Tagajo sunflowers. True to form, they are currently in full swing from late July through early August. The sight of that vast yellow carpet stretching across the fields is truly a breathtaking sight. It gets particularly busy at weekends with visitors, camera in hand. You'll find the fields just north of Tagajo Park, along the prefectural road. By public transport, it's a 10-minute bus ride from JR Tagajo Station, and if you're driving, there's a handy car park.
A Relaxed Day Out at Tagajo Park
After you've taken in the sunflowers, it's well worth extending your stroll to Tagajo Park. The expansive grounds are home to the historic Tagajo ruins and a large lawn area that's a firm favourite with locals looking to unwind. From early morning, you'll see elderly residents out for their daily walk and families with young children playing. Once you've had a wander around the park, it's time for a break. A short five-minute drive away, you'll find Ban Dai Tagajo, a supermarket incredibly popular with the local mums. Their own-brand ready meals and locally-sourced vegetables are particularly good value and delicious. It's a great spot to pick up some bits for an impromptu picnic back in the park.
If you're feeling a bit peckish, keep an eye out for those famous golden arches. McDonald's Tagajo is conveniently located on Route 45. It's a real local hub – you'll see high school students hanging out after class, or parents from the local junior football club grabbing a takeaway on the school run. Checking out the latest limited-edition burgers is a guilty pleasure for many.
A New Favourite: Staying at Hotel Route-Inn Tagajo Station East
More and more people are choosing to make an overnight trip of their visit to Tagajo these days. A big reason for that is the Hotel Route-Inn Tagajo Station East, which opened a couple of years ago. You can't beat the location – it's just a three-minute walk from the east exit of JR Tagajo Station. It's popular with business travellers, but also a hit with families visiting for leisure. A major plus point is the large artificial hot spring bathhouse, perfect for soothing tired muscles after a long day of exploring. The breakfast buffet, featuring local specialities, is a lovely touch and adds to the whole travel experience.
If you're coming to Tagajo, why not make a proper break of it and stay overnight? Using the hotel as a base, it's also easy to explore nearby Shiogama and Matsushima.
