Right after the rainy season ends, summer arrives in Tagajo, Miyagi. As a local, one thing I eagerly wait for every year is the massive bloom of Tagajo sunflowers. Just like clockwork, they're hitting their peak from late July through early August again this year. The vast fields, completely carpeted in brilliant yellow, are absolutely stunning. Weekends, in particular, see the area buzzing with people, cameras in hand. The fields are located a bit north of Tagajo Park, along the prefectural road. If you're using public transport, it's about a 10-minute bus ride from JR Tagajo Station, and if you're driving, there's parking available, so no worries there.

A Relaxing Day Out at Tagajo Park

After checking out the sunflowers, I highly recommend heading over to Tagajo Park. The sprawling grounds are home to the historic Tagajo ruins, which give you a real sense of the past, and a large grassy plaza that's a favorite spot for locals. From early morning, you'll see elderly folks out for their walk and families with kids playing around. Once you've had a good walk around the park, it's time for a break. Just a 5-minute drive from the park is MaxValu Tagajo, a supermarket that's a massive hit with the local homemakers. Their in-house deli items are particularly great, and the locally-grown vegetables are both cheap and delicious. Grabbing some picnic supplies here and heading back to the park to eat is a whole vibe.

If you're feeling a bit peckish, that iconic sign we all know is your marker. McDonald's Tagajo is conveniently located along National Route 45. It's a real community hub – you'll see high school kids hanging out after school, or parents of the local youth soccer team grabbing takeout during pick-up and drop-off. Checking out the limited-time new menu items is also a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Lately, more and more people are choosing to stay overnight in Tagajo. A big reason for that is Hotel Route-Inn Tagajo Station East, which opened two years ago. Their breakfast buffet, featuring local Miyagi specialities, also adds a nice touch to your travel memories.
