【Tagajo】Summer Sunflowers and Local Hidden Gems: A Complete Guide from Parks to Hotels
Summer has officially arrived in Tagajo, Miyagi, right as the rainy season ends. As a local, one of the things I look forward to most every year is the massive bloom of Tagajo sunflowers. Just like clockwork, they're in peak season from late July to early August. The sight of the vast fields blanketed in brilliant yellow is absolutely breathtaking. On weekends, the area is bustling with visitors, camera in hand. You'll find the fields a bit north of Tagajo Park, along the prefectural road. By public transport, it's about a 10-minute bus ride from JR Tagajo Station. If you're driving, there's a parking lot available, so no worries there.
A Relaxing Day Out at Tagajo Park
After taking in the sunflowers, I highly recommend heading over to Tagajo Park. The spacious grounds are home to the historic Tagajo Ruins and a large lawn square where locals come to unwind. From early morning, you'll see elderly folks out for a walk and families with kids playing. After a stroll through the park, it's time for a break. About a five-minute drive from the park is Bandai Tagajo Store, a supermarket that's a huge hit with local homemakers. Their original prepared foods and locally sourced vegetables are especially tasty and affordable. Grabbing some picnic supplies here and eating back at the park is a great way to spend the day.
If you're feeling a bit peckish, you can't miss that iconic sign. McDonald's Tagajo Store is conveniently located on Route 45. It's a real community hub, where you'll see local high school students hanging out after school and parents of the local youth soccer team grabbing takeout during pickup. Checking out their latest seasonal offerings is one of my little pleasures.
A New Favorite: Staying at Hotel Route-Inn Tagajo Station East
Lately, more and more people are choosing to stay overnight in Tagajo. One big reason is Hotel Route-Inn Tagajo Station East, which opened two years ago. You can't beat the location—it's just a three-minute walk from the east exit of JR Tagajo Station. It's popular not only with business travelers but also with families visiting for leisure. A major plus is the large artificial hot spring bathhouse, perfect for soothing tired muscles after a long day of exploring. The breakfast buffet, featuring local specialties, is another highlight that adds to the travel experience.
If you've made the trip to Tagajo, why not take your time and stay overnight? Using the hotel as a base makes it easy to explore nearby Shiogama and Matsushima as well.
