Sirius: From Uppsala's Football Pitch to the Brightest Star in the Sky
It was one of those nights at Studenternas IP that you don't soon forget. Chilly, sure, but with an electric charge in the air that made you forget you were still bundled up in your winter jacket. IK Sirius FK had hosted a well-organized away team for a showdown, and even though the final whistle blew at 1–1—a fair result considering the chances—something else entirely stuck with me. Not just the fighting spirit of Blåsvart (the Blue-Black), but the whole atmosphere. Because while the teams battled it out on the pitch, something was happening in the stands and over the speakers that got me thinking: Sirius is so much more than just a football club.
Sirius – The Name That Shines the Brightest
For us Uppsala locals, IK Sirius is a given part of everyday life. But the name, which the club has carried since 1907, has a resonance that extends far beyond Studenternas. Sirius is, first and foremost, the brightest star in the sky, a part of the Canis Major constellation. Right now, in March, it's especially visible in our northern sky—a reminder that spring is actually on its way. It's easy to imagine the founders sitting there over a hundred years ago, wanting a name that would shine as brightly as their ambitions. And sure enough, with their Allsvenskan (top-tier league) presence in recent years, they've managed to do just that.
When Music Meets Football – And SiriusXM Joins the Game
But back to this weekend's match. Just before kickoff, as the team ran onto the field, a dark, pulsating guitar riff thundered from the speakers. It was a track that immediately took me back to those late-night drives home from away games, when I usually crank up SiriusXM in the car (yep, the app works great here in Sweden). Their channels, especially the ones digging into the darker wave of post-punk and new wave, have become my soundtrack. And this year, they seem to have found a whole new level. Just in the past few weeks, for example, they've aired a couple of specialty dark wave playlists that feel like they're pulled straight from a night in Uppsala—cold, atmospheric, yet still full of life.
- March 1st – a playlist mixing early Cure with newer bands like Drab Majesty. Perfect for a Sunday stroll along the Fyris River.
- March 8th – the channel was graced by none other than one of the founding members of the legendary album "Pornography." It was a trip straight down the rabbit hole, with tracks that made the whole car vibrate.
And you know what? Several of the songs from that very March 8th playlist popped up at Studenternas this past Saturday. It's no coincidence—several players have admitted they listen to SiriusXM before matches to get in the right headspace. Sirius meeting Sirius, so to speak. It's a full-circle moment.
Sirius Black – The Grim on the Stands
As if that wasn't enough, midway through the second half, I spotted a banner that made me grin from ear to ear. Some supporters had painted a large silhouette of a dog, and underneath it read "Sirius Black." For those not steeped in the Harry Potter universe, that's the godfather, the Grim, who transforms into a massive dog. And sure, with a little imagination, you can see the parallels—a faithful, loyal, slightly mischievous animal that always shows up when it matters most. Just like our football club, which time and again bounces back from setbacks. The fans prove, yet again, that they're the most creative in Sweden.
Looking Ahead – What's Next?
A tough away game awaits next weekend, but with this energy—both on the pitch and in the stands—I'm not worried. IK Sirius has been around for over 115 years, and the name will keep on shining. Whether you're here for the football, the music on SiriusXM, the stargazing, or just to pay homage to a black dog from a book, you're welcome. Because Sirius isn't just a club. It's a whole world of experiences, gathered under one sky.
And don't forget: next time you hear a dark guitar riff from the speakers, look up at the sky. Up there, if the clouds part, he's winking—our own little star reminding us that anything is possible.
