Sun over the Lågen

It's been a long, grey winter, but it looks like the sun is finally peeking through. We're in for some milder weather, and if we're lucky, several places in the lower North Island could even see daytime highs in the teens over the next few days. That nor'west arch might just give us an early taste of spring. But hey, we're Kiwis – we know better than to count our chickens. Will it really be sunny, or are we just being teased? One thing's for sure: when the sun does decide to show its face, you've got to soak it up for all it's worth.

From winter gloom to spring sunshine

After weeks of grey skies, we're all craving a bit of light and warmth. Now, it feels like summer's finally on the way, and temperatures in sheltered spots could creep into the mid-teens. It's classic, isn't it? The moment the sun gets a bit of traction, we're out the door, tilting our faces towards it. But don't be fooled – that spring sun is stronger than you think. It's easy to forget how quickly you can burn when you're finally getting a dose of vitamin D after a long winter.

Don't skimp on the sunscreen and sunnies

Yep, you read that right. Even though there's still a chill in the air, that spring sun is relentless on skin that's been covered up for months. Sunscreen should be your best mate over the next few days, especially if you're heading out for a tramp or up the mountain. There's still plenty of snow lying around in places, and the reflection off that white stuff really ramps up the UV.

And what about your eyes? A decent pair of sunglasses is worth their weight in gold right now. Not only do they cut the glare from snow and ice, but they also protect your peepers from the intense light. Plus, let's be honest, they make you look the part. So dig out your best outdoor gear – it's time to make the most of the sun!

Sunsets you won't want to miss

When the sun finally graces us with its presence, the evenings get a whole lot better too. A crisp spring evening with the sunset painting the harbour or the hills can be pure magic. Here are a few top spots to catch a real cracker of a sunset:

  • Wellington Harbour: Head out to a point or along the waterfront and watch the sun slowly sink below the horizon.
  • The West Coast: Rugged coastlines and the Tasman Sea create dramatic skies and a blaze of colour.
  • Central Otago: The mountains and lakes provide an epic backdrop for those golden hour shots.

Wherever you are, just make sure you stop for a moment and take it all in. These are the moments we've been waiting for all winter.

Our solar system and a solar eclipse

The sun isn't just crucial for our weather and our mood – it's the centre of our whole solar system. Without it, there'd be no life on Earth. And every now and then, we get a spectacular reminder of its power, like during a solar eclipse. This year, we're in for a treat: a partial solar eclipse will be visible from parts of New Zealand. It happens when the moon slides perfectly between the Earth and the sun, creating an incredible sight in the sky. Keep an eye on the dates – and remember, never look directly at the sun without proper eye protection!

So, whether the sun's out in full force or playing hide and seek behind the clouds this week, it's good to know that spring is well and truly on its way. And when that warmth finally arrives, we'll be ready – sunscreen in the pack, sunnies on, and eyes fixed on the horizon. Enjoy the days ahead, and don't forget to look up when the evening sun sets the sky ablaze.
