Sun over the Lågen river

It's been a long, grey winter, but it finally looks like the sun is peeking through. We're now in for some milder weather, and if we're lucky, several places in Southern Norway can expect double-digit temperatures in the coming days. A touch of spring could be in the air thanks to some föhn winds, but as always, we Norwegians are a tad sceptical: will it really be sunny, or are we being fooled again? One thing's for sure: when the sun does eventually show its face, you've got to make the most of it.

From winter darkness to spring sunshine

After a long spell of cloudy skies and little sun, many of us are craving light and warmth. Warmer weather now seems to be on the horizon, and in the valleys, temperatures could creep into double digits. It's typical that as soon as the sun gets a hold, we're straight outside to feel the warmth on our faces. But don't be fooled – the March sun is stronger than you think. It's easy to forget how quickly you can get burned when you finally get some sun after a long winter.

Don't forget the sun cream and sunglasses

Yes, you read that right. Even though there's still a chill in the air, the spring sun is relentless on skin that hasn't seen light for months. Sun cream should be your constant companion over the next few days, especially if you're heading out for a walk or up into the mountains. Snow is still lying around in many places, and the reflection off the white snow significantly intensifies UV radiation.

And what about your eyes? A decent pair of sunglasses is worth its weight in gold right now. Not only do they cut through the glare from snow and ice, but they also protect your eyes from damage caused by bright light. Plus, they make you look the part. Dig out your best outdoor gear – it's time to soak up that sun!

Sunsets worth staying for

When the sun finally graces us with its presence, the evenings become so much more beautiful. A crisp spring evening with a sunset over the fjord or mountains can be pure magic. Here are a few tips on spots where the sunset truly puts on a show:

  • The Oslofjord: Head out to a headland or jetty and watch the sun slowly slip into the sea.
  • Western Norway: Fjords and mountains create dramatic shadows and colourful skies.
  • Northern Norway: The midnight sun is on its way, but in the meantime, you can catch spectacular sunsets well into the evening.

Wherever you are, just make sure you set aside some time to stop and enjoy the view. These are exactly the moments we've been waiting for all winter.

The solar system and a solar eclipse

The sun isn't just vital for our weather and our mood – it's also the centre of our solar system. Without it, there would be no life on Earth. Every now and then, we get spectacular reminders of just how powerful the sun is, for instance during a solar eclipse. This year, we actually have the chance to experience a partial solar eclipse visible from parts of Norway. It happens when the moon slides in between the Earth and the sun, creating an unusual spectacle in the sky. Keep an eye on the dates – and remember, never look directly at the sun without proper protection!

So whether the sun peeks through or stays hidden behind the clouds this week, it's good to know that spring is on its way. When the warmth finally arrives, we'll be ready – with sun cream in the rucksack, sunglasses on, and eyes fixed on the horizon. Enjoy the days ahead, and don't forget to look up when the evening sun paints the sky in shades of red and gold.
